Default Master of Ceremonies...

What exactly is their role? To keep the night going smoothly through speeches and introduce the out of town people? Do they need to give a toast or pay the DJ or anything like that? I am just wondering so that I have a better understanding of whom I should ask...is this a role generally for a family member? friend?

Just hoping to get some clarification! I haven't been to a wedding in YEARS so I can't remember.!!

I think it is basically whoever is on the microphone, so usually the dj or lead singer of the band, or wedding coordinator, etc. Yeah, they basically just do announcements on what's happening next kind of stuff, and introduce speakers/toasters etc.

Usually, the dj or the lead singer in the band will be your master of ceremonies. They usually have the microphone and can announce when events are coming up, who is toasting, etc. Just make sure the dj or band leader has a list of all of the events and what time they are supposed to happen. Plus, the master of ceremonies helps keep things on track.

This job is more commonly taken over by DJ's and band leaders - just make sure they don't charge you extra for it. I will also be having an MC for a more personal touch - its my brother in law. He will also be "mingling" a bit to make sure everything is going alright. He's the goofy, fun, shameless type so it'll work well for him

Default to add to that

Who is the MC? My Fiance asked his brother to be the best man as well as the MC. Does that happen? I do know or at least I think that the BM and MOH get up and say something about the bride and groom, is that pretty much the same. We are not having a formal sit down dinner because we are getting married late afternoon (5:00pm) so we thought a light buffet will be nice, it keeps cost down too. Does that change anything??? Please help

Traditionally the BM does make a toast, the MOH may or may not do that too. When you say you will have a light buffet, are you talking about a dinner buffet or just finger foods? I am also getting married at about 5 pm and we are planning on serving hors 'dourves during the cocktail hour and then a dinner buffet style.

The BM can be the MC - it doesn't matter what type of reception you're having - its who you WANT it to be. It could be anyone on the planet, no matter what their role, if any in the wedding. Please remember that you don't have to do everything according to early 20th century ettiquette.
