Since I'm loosing my job and I had a floater holiday to take before I get let go, I wanted to take a Wednesday off in February and have the seamstress look at my dress. She's only there on Wednesdays and only during the week. The lady at the bridal shop thought it was too soon to have her look at my dress. I don't want it altered now but I want to have an idea of what needs to be done and how much it will cost. And since I don't know what my schedule will be like after I loose my job I thought that this would be the best time to get it done. She told me that the lady doesn't like to do things this early due to weight flucuations and everything. I've been the same size and weight give or take 5 lbs for the last 7-8 years. The end of February will be just over 5 months until my wedding. This doesn't seem too early to me, am I wrong? I also want to make sure that she has time to do my dress considering how many summer weddings there usually is.
Plus, my dress is a little too big with a corset back so even if she takes it in too much, we can let it out a little in the corset.
How early are you getting your dress altered?

your NOT wrong...YOU ARE PAYING for this service, not to mention the cost of your dress. i think you should stand up for yourself here...i think you should be able to get it done when the bride wants to NOt when they think its appropriate!!!!
good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Thanks, I did make my appointment so we'll see what happens. I'm just the type of person who wants things done early so I don't have to worry about it later. And I don't know how many Wednesdays I'll be able to take off when I get a new job so it all makes sense to me.

alley i think maybe you should wait.. i mean i know youre losing your job but what about getting the dress altered when ure done with your job and taking this holiday to relax.. do u know if u have a new job lined up?
i do think if u really want it done now that you should just do it.. otherwise its gonna be one more thing on your list that you want to do and as the wedding gets closer ull just get m ore stressed, itll be good to know ure done with one more thing.

I waited until closer to my wedding...I took my gown in 9 weeks before. But I also didn't need anything done except to have the train bustled.
If you aren't worried about the gown fitting due to any weight changes (and with the corset back, I wouldn't be either), then I'd just take it when you have the time, and if that means now, then so be it.

I noticed that you are getting married one week after me. I am going to wait until about mid May to get my alterations done. My gown is about two sizes to big, and I am also trying to loose some extra weight. The alterations place that I am going to suggested around May for my 7/29 wedding. Ultimately it is up to you, but I would wait till about May to get them done.
Good Luck
Karen:)

Well Alley, if your weight doesn't fluctuate more than just a few pounds, I'd get it done too. I could never do that, I'm all over the scales. But good for you, I say go for it! :)

I would say go ahead and do it now. If I only fluctuated 5 or so lbs in the last 7 years I would too.

My dress ***e in May, we fitted it at the end of June, and the final fitting was the first week of August for our August 20th wedding. It all deppends on how much needs to be done and how busy they are.
If i had to had mine altered i was planning on taking it about June .... and we have the same date might i add..... but i can understand just wanting to consult.

I wasn't able to get time off work that day anyway so it will probably have to wait until later. I just hate that she's only available on Wednesdays.

My seamstress is only available on certain days too, BUT, because I brought my dress to them already so they can store it there, she had me put the dress on, so she could see what might need to be done. Then, she went ahad and made an appointment in May for my first fitting. Its nice to have that appointment out of the way & it was nice of her to have me put the dress on so she could make herslef some notes about what she thinks will need to be done. She put the notes with the dress, so its all together! Love the place I am going to! My sister went to them 14 yrs ago, and they are still in biz, same people, same great service.

I figure that I might see when they lay me off and maybe take a couple days off (I need it bad!). Then if it falls right, I'll try to make another appointment with them during the days I have off.
