Ok, I found a super nice lady that does great work on wedding cakes, i've loved almost every pic she's shown me of the cakes she's made, and on top of her doing great work, she's the FIRST sells person that I've spoken with in the last couple of months of planning --on ways to SAVE money. She said what she does for some brides trying to save money is for us to pick out the cake we want and however we want it designed but only in 2 teirs, she suggested that the bride/groom and bridal party/immediate family eat from this cake and she makes sheet cakes that can be served to the rest of the party for a fraction of the cost. She made a good point that the main reason for the cake is the display and having it for the bride and groom to cut...we'd save anywhere from 50-100 bucks, and I think it's a great idea, just wondering if the rest of the guests would find it tacky or be offended by eating the sheet cake, me personally if i was a guest at a reception wouldn't care but thought maybe i'd ask others for their opinions.

Thanks!

That's exactly what we're planning to do...how are they going to know if they got a piece of the "cake" or the sheet cake? the caterer cuts it in the back

awesome i think we will definately go with this idea, i figured though the guests would know it wasn't the same cake 1- because the size of the cake obviously can't feed 100+ guests and 2- probably the design or frosting won't be as elaborate, but i think it's a great idea and glad to hear someone else is doing the same! Thanks!

I am doing the same thing too!! I have over 250 people and I don't want a tower for a cake. The sheet cake is cut up in the back and brought out on plates. Nobody will even know. Its a great way to save money. Also, if you want a third layer to make your cake look a little taller, use a styrofoam mold for the top layer.

I don't think that's tacky at all. I've been to lots of wedding where they have a small cake just for show or they have a cake made out of styrofoam with just a little piece of cake to cut and then have lots of sheet cake. Most people don't even know the difference because most places take the cake in back to cut it anyway.

I'm also having a grooms cake. It will be displayed. So do I have the wedding cake & grooms cake out and then a sheet cake tucked away?????

if you are doing this for the look of a smaller cake that seams fine.
But if you are doing a sheet cake to save money, I think you should
negotiate the cake price. If they cut the cost by $50 - $100 just
by adding sheet cakes and eliminating a layer of the wedding cake
then you should ask them why the price difference. They are still
baking, decorating and delivering the same amount of cake. Unless you
are using Fondant or elaborate details, to slap on some buttercream
and some designs should'nt be much of a price difference. To a cake
designer/decorator 3 or 4 tiers are no different in difficulty than 2.

Yes.

And, my son's wedding had about 350 guests so they definately did the sheet cake. (But I got a piece of the wedding cake:D ) So, make sure your bridal party and parents get part of the main cake and use the sheet cake for the rest of the guests.

Along with many of the other ladies here, that's what we're doing. And I understand how it drops the price. When the cake is cut, many of the decorations do not show. So the sheet cakes don't really need to be decorated, just frosted or fondant'd, whatever you're using. So the price is dropped because the time spent on them is less, and they don't have to be 'perfect', as they're not a centerpiece.

this is what I hear MOST engaged couples are doing these days! Saving money ISN'T tacky!!! Anyone who scrutinizes the cake they take home at the end of the night & "notices" it isn't the cake that was displayed has some serious issues! Ha!

Just have it in the same flavor similar colors whatever and they wont know the difference expecially if the cake is served to them.... besides cake is cake isnt it all yummy!
