View Full Version : How Early?

How early before your wedding did you buy your wedding gown? I am in the process of losing weight and toning up and I don't want to go buy my gown just to have to have more alterations done later. I know there will be some, but I might decide I like another style when my body looks different. I still have 8 months, I just don't want to wait too long. Thoughts?

PS I am doing well with the weight loss. I have averaged 2-3 pounds a week for the last 3 weeks. Slow and steady! That was really with just cutting out fast food and drinking way more water. Now once I start exercising I hope it is a little more, but I can't complain about 2-3 pounds a week.

some of the places that i have seen and talked to it will take up to 3-6 months to get your dress in. That doesnt account for the alterations that you will have done either.

I think I will give myself until the end of Jan. or beg. of Feb. to get as much off as possible and then start trying dresses on. I am not really overweight, I just want to lose about 20 lbs. and tone up. By then I should have a good idea of what I will look like. Then anything extra will just be a bonus. My goal is to be at my goal weight by June so I have 2-3 months to make any adjustments.

I bought my dress a year before my wedding date. It needs to be altered in many different places so I didn't really care about losing weight or anything because I have to get it altered anyway. I just like to have things done as soon as I can. I'd say go look at dresses if you want. If you find one you want, buy it. I wouldn't care too much about losing weight because if you find your dream dress, it's easier to take it in than it is to take it out.

I bought my dress in July but I ordered "off the rack" at David's Bridal so I only had to wait 2 weeks for them to clean it and do a bead check etc. You should check with different places in your area and find out how long the dresses typically take to come in. I too am losing weight and toning up but I figured better to take the dress in... tailors work with a magic wand you know! ;)

I bought my dress in March 2005, so that would be 15 months before the wedding, and it took 6 months to get in.

I think it also depends on what designers dresses you like. I ordered mine 6 months out and got it in about a month. However, I know that some designers take longer. I know that Group USA told me anything that I didn't buy off the rack would take 6-10 months to come in. I also know that Alfred Angelo takes a lot of time to come in. So, I would start looking now and if you find "the dress" ask how far in advance you need to order it, so that way you don't get stuck not getting your dream dress because you waited too long.

I ordered mine at 8 months. They told me 12-16 weeks. It's been 15 weeks and I'm still waiting. I'm expecting it any day now (or else a certain shop is going to hear from me every single day until it does arrive!!!)

i ordered mine at the last possible minute - 5mo. It took 14 weeks to come in, and after altering, I picked it up on the way to the rehearsal...

I ordered mine at 10 months before. It is supposed to take 6-7 months to come in. So far it has been four months, and no sign of it yet. I wanted to make sure I had a little wiggle room between the dress coming in and the wedding b/c I am paranoid about not getting the right dress in and things like that!

I'm not trying to lose weight though, so it didn't matter when I ordered it. I would start looking around if I were you though. If you're buying some place like David's you won't need to order as early as you would if you were buying at a private boutique.

I bought my dress about a month and half after. I am also trying to tone but I don't think I am going to change that much between then and my wedding

I just bought my dress yesterday and I'm 1 year and 8 months away! lol!!! I don't care; it's absolutely perfect! I told the lady at the store that I was planning on loosing about 20 lbs and she said it will not be hard to take in my dress. Plus, it takes 6 months to come in. If I was getting married in Sept 2006 instead of 2007, I would be nervous with 8 or 9 months away!!! I'm really early...but I say if you find the perfect dress, go for it! You don't want it to be discontinued or anything!

I wound get shopping now. I too am in the process of loosing wt. Since I ordered my gown and now I have lost over 20 lbs. I still have another 16 to go. I am like briansgirl and order well in advance. I ordered in 10/04 and got it last February. My wedding is 7/29/06. I am very very happy that I did what I did. I love my gown and grant will have to alter it. Hey that is OK. It is easier to take it in than let it out. The way I am storing it is; burretio wrapping it in a white sheet, storing it in a cool dark place. I do pull my gown out every three months to check it out and make sure that there are no yellow spot on either the gown or the sheet. And wash my sheet, then rewrap the gown. So far so good. The end of May I am going going for alterations. One other thing... Once you find your dream gown and order it this is one less stress. For me I can concentrate on other aspects of my wedding.

Good Luck
Karen :)

You can buy your dress whenever.....just wait for alterations. My alterations only took about a month. Wait until you've lost what you want and then stop. I lost 25 lbs before my wedding and then maintained the last 2 months.
