I am looking for an alternative to the unity candle ceremony. For one thing, my fiance and I want to make the ceremony a mix of some traditional things and some things that would really make this 'our' ceremony. Another problem is that I am having an outdoor wedding in April. Since it can get pretty windy where my fiance and I live I am afraid that if we would opt to use a unity candle, it might not stay lit. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't know if this is too late, but I have seen several unique alternatives to a unity candle. You could do something with colored sand (his one color, yours another, and a neutral sand the third. I have also seen the bride collect flowers or those flattened marbles from her family and the groom collect them from his family and they combine them together in one vase. Talk to you pastor, they can usually give you different ideas to use as well.

I've heard of the sand thing, or trading roses. I think what my Fiance and I are going to do instead of a unity candle, though, is a "hand ceremony". I have a couple versions here, but I think we're going to edit them to fit us better.
VERSION I
[Bride's name], please face [Groom's name], and hold his hands,
palms up, so you may see the gift that they are to you.
These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and vibrant with love, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as he promises to love you all the days of his life.
These are the hands that will work along side yours, as together you build your future, as you laugh and cry, as you share your innermost secrets and dreams.
These are the hands you will place with expectant joy against your stomach, until he too, feels his child stir within you.
These are the hands that look so large and strong, yet will be so gentle as he holds your baby for the first time.
