my fh wants to go to jamaica. i'm fine with that. i went to a sandals seminar thingy and got lots of info. my fh is the type that likes to get out there and be among the people of the country. (nothing too extreme. just the touristy parts but still among the culture) the impression i got from the sandals people is that couples are mainly on the resort and really don't leave. i'm sure it's ultimatley up to us if we want to leave the resort but now my concern is safety. are there lots of other tourists out there? if you've been, please let me know. what do you reccomend? thanks a bunch. elisa

I haven't been, but we are going on our honeymoon there, so if you get any information, post it!!! Which resort are you going to? My travel agent said that not many people leave the resort area and that the only public place is the beaches of sandals. She said that it's just a different way down there, and that most tourist dont know how to deal with locals, so it could be tricky. We are just going to stay at Sandals and just be safe cause I have heard some things about the crime down there. Good Luck

I don't know if you two have already left for your honeymoon, but we went to Jamaica last year and stayed at Couples (similar to Sandals) in Negril. The all-inclusive resort was the best vacation I've ever had and I am the type of person that enjoys experiencing the culture of the country I'm visiting. We did get off the resort and do a couple of tours, but I'm even wishing we spent more time on the resort. I would highly recommend an all-inclusive when traveling to third-world countries or places where there aren't a lot of restaurant choices. It just makes everything so simple when you've got your meals, drinks, and most activities paid for up front.

We decided on the couples resort, ocho rios! I love our decision. Good Luck making yours! We went with couples instead of sandals cause it's a bit more classy and up scale than sandals, but is the same idea as a sandals.

We are going with Sandals but in the Bahamas. I really like to experience real life too when I travel. But, this is my honeymoon. It is the time for me to unwind and relax after 15 long months of wedding planning. I picked Sandals for that reason, I didn't have to leave the resort at all. The point of Sandals is that I have every typ eof place to eat and activity imaginable for a tropical vacation right there at my fingertips, with most of it already paid for. I don't have to go anywhere else if I don't want to. The resorts also work with various tour companies that can take you out to some of the sites of the island as well, but this does cost extra.
If you do go out to experience Jamacia alone, please be very careful. It does have a very high crime rate. If you stay within the resort you are fine but outsode of it, depending on where you wander it can be pretty bad on the island.

I went to Negril over 10 years ago with my now MOH. We had a blast we just stayed in a cheap hotel on the 7 mile beach and walked the beach every day and picked out a restaurant to eat at for lunch and dinner. The food was fabulous and cheap. We took taxi's to the somewhat downtown area to go out at night and shopping during the day. We didn't have any problems with the people. I found that more of them bothered us when we were laying on the beach trying to sell us braids or ganga, which you shouldn't experience if you are in an all-inclusive.
Now this was 10 years ago and things have changed. We were two young women beinging very risky. You will be with your FH, which is much different. See if you can go on a tour or something. The island is beautiful and you should try to see it.

I'm the same way. I love to travel and experience real life and culture but this is my honeymoon. I just want to relax for a week and not worry about having money for dinner or getting robbed or anything else that happens to travelers. Jason and I are going to a Sandals resort too. It will be so nice to have everything paid for up front. A friend of mine went there on her honeymoon and loved it. And I think they left the island once or twice.
