My fiancee and I are both from Jamaica and we have decided to return there to exchange our vows in the presence of our friends and family. We are concerned that our marriage may not be recognised by the US government. Is this true and if so how can we ensure that when we return to the US our marriage will be recognised? Any assistance given will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

With so many "wedding vendors" on line from the Jamacian Islands I'm sure that the U.S. would reconize it. The only question I would have is the "legality of the person doing it". Be sure to check when you pick up the license forms there ask about the local customs, and laws reguarding wedding ministers.

You may also want to call your local county clerk's office - records (weddings/Births/deaths) dept to see if they may have something in writing to help you answer this one.. I'm sure it is reconized, I know European weddings are, but they had to be translated first and have a raised seal on the originals for calif to accept them.

The next call you should make, would be to any divorce attorney so you know who, what and how many hoops you'll have to jump thru should you ever need to know later down the road.

With this info, you can make a sound choice and examine your commitments to one another in all honesty. WE wish you the best, and please let us know what info you are able to find out so others can have it as well.

(trying hard to make this as generic as I can so others may find it useful)
