Is your wedding really formal? If not, I don't see why it would be a problem. Suits are a whole lot cheaper. You can find some very nice ones too.

no clue how formal or informal just yet. but we just spent clsoe to 800 on his suit in may, along with buying his dad's and 2 brothers as a gift. i actually like the suit better

If you like it better then who cares what other people say, go with what you want.

I don't see anything wrong with it - we would have preferred suits but it was cheaper to rent tuxes than to buy the suits we wanted - I have the guys wearing a long tie instead of a bowtie - I think it goes better with us :)

My FH and our brothers are wearing black suits with matching shirts and ties. I see no reason why this shouldn't be acceptable. And they'll look just as nice in matching suits as in matching tuxes.

you can have the guys wear a chinese color instead of a shirt that has a bow tie. I really like those colors. mmmmmmmm yummy.
