The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has a really good website for travel tips to minimize your chances of being searched at the airport. It has some great information to make your transition through the security checkpoints smooth sailing. They even have sections that address wedding travel, flying with kids, and how to dress to fly. You’ll want to bookmark this site for your future travel plans.

You bring up a good point, but I just want to clarify something. Every person who wants to board an aircraft is screened at the security checkpoint. If during the screening, TSA sees something suspicious, that person will be pulled aside for a search. Sometimes brides-to-be want to bring their own cake servers in their carry-on bag. This is a prohibited item and anyone who does something like this will be searched. The website points out those types of items that should be placed in checked baggage to minimize your chances of being pulled aside for a search.
I'm with you. I would rather everyone be given a full blown search, but that would probably quadruple the time it already takes to get through the security checkpoint. Thanks for the reply!

Did you look at the site? It isn't giving tips on how to get out of getting screened. It is giving tips like to wear sandals or easy to remove shoes to save time in the screening process.

Those are all great tips! Any tips for those of us that have metal in their legs that ALWAYS set off the detectors? :P I carry around a copy of my medical records - and that helps to speed things up a little. Its funny - every time I go through the screening, before I even get there, I take my shoes off, roll my pantleg up, etc. They look at me funny till I get up there and tell them "I have all kinds of pretty metal in my leg - I'll go through the baggage screening machine if it'll make it easier" they always get a chuckle out of that :) I always get pulled aside for an extra screening, etc. It doesn't bother me, I just always make sure to get there early. The best is international travel - LOVE that :)
Naw really tho - is there anything inparticular I can do, aside from carrying a copy of my medical records and showing them the scars? I even have xrays laf.

i had some similar problems.2 yrs ago i still had all that metal in my left leg!
at washingtons dulles international airport i set the alarm off,of course.first i was showed to a ribboned area, then i had to go to a special room for further inspection.even with my NICE scar (from hip to knee) i had to be touched down.
but that was ok with me,because we all want the most possible security after september,11.
before our return flight from tampa, i went to a medical center, got an x-ray and a certificate from a doctor, that i had that metal in my leg.
prepared like that, i hardly could wait to set the detectors off again. of course it happened. i mentioned my story and asked for my purse so i could show my brand new records! all the lady from the tsa did,was petting down my leg(with my pants ON) and said "it`s ok. get well soon!"
after another surgery i`m now "metal-free", so this time there will be no extra screening or pulling aside. at least not because of the metal!!
