I was also thinking of using the glass fish instead. The ones with the big bubble on top to make them float.

That's exactly what I want to use as a center piece, but I wasn't sure how much it would cost to make...I would love to hear how you make out with them!

My wedding is not until October 06, So you won't know for awhile. I am having a small wedding so I only need a max of 10 probably.

That's exactly what I want to use as a center piece, but I wasn't sure how much it would cost to make...I would love to hear how you make out with them!

Yes, that would be lovely.

I honestly think the glass fish is the way to go, they will not die on the tables at dinner time!

I would be worried the glass fish would get tangled up in the bottom of the water lilly. Betas are usually a pretty good fish to go with and do not need any type of air pump to put air into the water. How many tables will you need at your reception? Betas in my area go for about $3 - $4. They are very pretty and have a lot of different colors. If you are having kids at the reception then you can give them each a Beta after the reception or you can include them with the centerpieces as gifts.

I can see the pros and cons of using live fish. However, I have seen this particular arrangement in person before, as a co-worker made a few for people in her department that they kept in their offices, and it was pretty nice. The fish seemed healthy and happpy. If you use them for centerpieces, please make sure you can care for the fish after the wedding, or that you have people that will care for them if you were to give them away as gifts. And to prevent having sick or cranky fish at the reception, maybe you can make them ahead of time to give the fish an opportunity to adapt to their new home. Also, if you do this, watch how they react when you change their water because if they become lethargic (as some fish can be after a water change), then you will know not to change the water right before the wedding.

Very good suggestions SOM.

Ryan and I almost used Beta fish!

But we thought we were going to have more tables and the cost would be too high and we'd have to find a way to transport them back to Rochester while we're in Cozumel...

Hey, many points there to think about with the live fish idea. I also never thought about the glass fish getting tangled. Well hummmm......what to do now?

Ooh, oooh... I'll keep them! I'll give them a good home and keep them clean and loved and hopefully away from my cat. :D

BTW: The main problem with our fish idea is that we're getting married 8 hrs. from our house... and flynig straight out of Burlington for our honeymoon 2 days later and no one's making the drive back here that I would trust with fishies in a car.

And if I remember right, Beta fish can go a few days without food (my FMIL has one in her office and she leaves it for long weekends without a problem) and get more energetic after a good cleaning.

I had a Beta fish that lived for about 3 or 4 years. They can go without food for several days, they do not need air, and they love to get clean water. However, I noticed with my beta as long as he was in the fish tank with the other tropical fish he was happier. Betas cannot be combined with goldfish. There is something about goldfish that will kill the beta. Male beta fish do fight other male betas but they can be placed in a tropical tank. Also, if you have a female beta in the tropical tank and she has little betas the male beta will kill the female. Male betas take care of the young. The only thing I can think of that killed my male beta I had for a long time was the move from my old house to the one I am in now. The car was hot and I had a wait outside so I could move the tank inside.

Well I was thinking of giving them away at the wedding not taking them home unless that is if no one wants them. I already have a fish tank filled with fish and as from what I know Betas can not be mixed with another fish, they are loners (correct me if I am wrong).

Ahhh...poor fishie. Well I guess we both posted at the same time and you were reading my mind. :) So if no one wanted the fish I could put them in my tank with my plattys and tetras then. :D

My beta just died last weekend. :( I was sad. I don't know why he died, maybe old age? I had him for almost 4 years. When we got him we were told that they only live like a year so I was surprised he lived so long. Even made it through 2 moves! So now I have an empty fish bowl. :( But Ben's going to take me to get a new one this weekend! Maybe I can convince him to get me a big fancy tank!

I think that is probably it. Male betas do not tend to live very long. In fact, the guy from Petsmart told me that if you can get a beta to live longer than two years you are doing good. I think it is time for some fancy fish talk and see if he will get you a bigger tank. If not, do like I did with my ex and just do it anyways.

my stepmom has 4 different tanks - she had a few betas over the years, the oldest one lived to was 4 - they don't tend to live very long. Oddly enough, the longest living fish she had was one of those "feeder fish" that they use for carnival prizes for kids. My nephew won him and gave him to my stepmom as a gift (those .25 cent fish at walmart - ya know what I mean?) Hes been alive for 6 freaking years! He's huge and his name is Beuford :P

LOL! I don't think I'll have to do that! He always lets me have my way! I'm pretty spoiled! To date the only thing he won't let me get is a Victoria's Secret credit card! I've tried but he won't budge! I guess he thinks I'm going to max it out and mess up our credit! But other than he always gets me what I want. The have self cleaning filters right? I would hate to have to clean out a big fancy tank all the time.

The thing with this idea is that people make these for offices and such. I don't see how it's any different from having the beta in a plain old bowl of water, except it's got a plant in the top and maybe a bow around the top. The environment (bowl of water with plant) isn't harmful to the fish. It isn't traumatic in any way.

I do understand, however, that people are concerned with how the fish will be cared for after the reception. As I said before, get them situated in their new home early and make sure there are responsible people willing to take them or keep them and care for them yourself. I do not recommend giving them away as prizes at the reception, but rather finding out ahead of time who would like to have one. Or if you must give them away, have your DJ make a statement about the fact that you want them cared for and if anyone receiving one feels as though they won't be able to, then they should allow someone else to take it.

I love the idea and think it would be beautiful. And fish in Chinese lore symbolize wealth. However, a friend of mine had goldfish in bowls at her wedding and about half of them were floating belly-up by the end of the reception. I think the problem was that they filled the bowls with regular chlorinated tap water and it killed the fish. Soooo, if you really want to do this, maybe do a "trial run" and make sure that whoever is in charge for putting them all together uses bottled spring water at room temperature or else the special tablets that clean the water.

That is one thing I do not want to happen. That would not be a could start to our new life together :) . I am going to buy the vases tonight. So excited!! :D

I bought the vases and ribbon to fo around the top. I have decided that I am going to use white rocks in the bottom and the ribbon I bought was white with doves and writting that say "With Love". I looks really nice.

Cute I idea....however, when I was at a wedding that had goldfish as centerpiece, by the end of the night the guys started to dare each other to drink them....DISGUSTING!
