Aug 25 2007.....this is the day my dream comes true. This is the date my fiance and I have set to gt married. This is our journal of how we met and the trials and tribulations that lead us to this day. It will be updated as often as I can remember to.

March 24, 2005
Today is the day I finally meet Travis after talking to him online and on the phone for weeks. I cant wait, im nervous and excited all in one. He is picking me up at my work placement and we are going to my place then to talk and get to know each other. Travis first emailed me cause he thought we had alot in comon and we realy do, i knew within a few times of talking to him that he was the man i was going to marry. So he picked me up from work today with a dozen red roses *how sweet* and we talked the night away. we made it official that we were dating around 4am on the 25. The only thing that made this bad was having to leave the day of the 25 to go to my parents for easter.

March 25, 2005
Today I woke up in his arms and knew i was in love. He took me to the bus stop and it was the hardest thing ever to have to leave him to go home. I made it though had a weekend at home and got back to his house and just about never left.

A few weeks later
Our one month aniversary, we made dinner together and celebrated our aniversary. We have swapped i love you's and said that we dont know where the other would be without each other. The night went well and again i fell asleep with the man of my dreams.

One month later,
Our two month aniversary, well today we swapped gifts and i told him i wanted to be with him forever, actaually i asked him to marry me, and he said yes. *L* Ive never been a conformist, but i couldnt be happier that he said yes. I got a promise ring from him that i love, and wear with pride. I cant wait to get a diamond from him to show off to the world.

Weeks later,
We have discussed my moving in with him and decided its a good idea, we also went to People's Jewlers and looked at some rings. ;) We picked out one that i liked and that was reasonably priced for us, we went back a few days later to buy and and get it sized. Our three month aniversary passed without much hoopla, i had gone to my parents house for that weekend and he stayed up at home. However when i got back, on the 26th, we made up for the time apart, and talked alot as we had been fighting recently, never anything serious but just general disagreements. On june 30th, 2005 he made me the happiest girl alive, we picked up the ring and he got down on his knees and asked me to marry him. I cried and cried and of course said yes.
We decided a wedding date, and are now putting things on hold and just enjoying the feeling of knowing we will be together forever.

July 03, 2005
Today Travis and I discussed our budget and it seems that he thinks we can have the wedding of my dreams on a 5k budget, and i have big dreams. Any advice on this would be great, in fact any words from anyone is always apreciated.

July 05, 2005
Yesterday was a big day for us, i picked out my wedding dress, *ebay for under 300* and found a great cheap way to do bouquets and flowers for the flower girl. We could possibly get all our flowers done for under 100.00 all silk flowers on ebay! Does anyone think its to soon to buy a wedding dress? I dont want to loose it.

a wedding on a budget of 5K is totally doable. Let us know what you're thinking - everything you want, and we'll help you squeeze it all into that budget! :)

I'm on a $5000 budget too, so I know it is totally doable. Just know that you need to decide up front what you are willing to compromise on and what you have to have a certain way. For instance, I am willing to compromise on flowers. I like them, but they are not something I am willing to pay hundreds of dollars for. Photography on the other hand is not something I am willing to compromise on what I want even if it cost a bit more.

Well ladies our budget is comming along well. I have all my flowers done for 100 dollars, i think i am getting my hair and make-up done for free, my pictures are being done by a friend for next to nothing, so things are comming along nicely! Still dress hunting I think that will take some time and money, as my parents have offered to help pay for a reception! :D It finally going as planned!

Welcome to the boards and the proposal was adorable. Ebay is pretty good about dresses isn't it. It's where I bought mine and was totally satisfied. If you need anything don't be afraid to ask! Good luck and congrats!

Thanks, I have looked at ebay a few times, but i think i want the experiance of trying on dresses, and what not. lol. But if i cant find anything i would likely go with ebay. My only concern with that, is what if I cant find a tailor to work with me, and take it in and what not?

I know what you mean about wanting to move the date up :). We only have a 10 month engagement but I want to get married now, I don't know if I could wait that long!! Congrats!!

Also $5,000 is totally doable (like everyone else said), I think the most important thing though is to realize you might have to make adjustments to what your "ideal" wedding is. We set ourselves on a budget too because we are paying for it all by ourselves, but someone said to me "in the end you will be just as married as the person who spent $25,000+ on a wedding", that made so much sense to me and really put into perspective what the day was supposed to be all about. We're doing a lot of DIY stuff for the wedding and it has saved us a ton. Shop around see what's out there and jump on good deals :)

Well last night we had friends from Barrie up to visit and I was kind of concerned about how this would go over. Travis is not really social and doesnt really have the best social skills. He made me proud though, he treated them like a true gracious host and was wonderfull to them all night. LOL however once behind closed doors he was no longer a gentleman and I had to remind him that we had company in the next room!!! lol Im glad it went well though. lol It makes me so happy to see him getting along well with my friends! I love him!

I do but it seems now that he realizes how happy I am goign to be and how happy I currently am he has backed off some. I am his baby girl and the last one to be married so I can understand. My mom is a different story though. She doesn't want me to get married or move away for some reason. His parents are cool with it but why can't my mom lighten up!

That's a great idea! I think that would be so cute!

Thought you might be interested: There are some GREAT ornaments I've seen around lately. Target, Walmart, and Meijer all have these big sections of ornaments that range in price from like $.99 to $4.99 or so-in all different themes and colors (that's how they're sorted). Anyway, at Walmart in particular, I noticed they had a lot of like icicles and snowflakes and stuff like that-in like that sparkle-blue-silver-white kind of combinations. You might wanna look into that for some decorations and stuff-or even to decorate your tree that the presents are going under. Just a heads up ;)

Amanda- I read your journal & checked out your website. It is really well done! I like the winter Wonderland theme, and the Christmas tree with gifts underneath. You could do the kind of blue/silver decorated tree, with white lights and snowflakes, to get away from the Christmas theme ???

I think what we are going to do is is keep the colors and everything the same and just take the cerimony and change how its worked. I have some really great Irish wedding vows. Any help for finding a traditional celtic wedding cerimony would be greatly appreciated.

Phoenix
12-09-2005, 10:18 AM
Ok I think these are going to be used as our vows. I love them!

"You cannon possess me for I belong to myself
But while we both wish it, I give you that which is mine to give
You cannon command me, for I am a free person
But I shall serve you in those ways you require
and the honeycomb will taste sweeter coming from my hand
"I pledge to you that yours will be the name I cry aloud in the night
and the eyes into which I smile in the morning
I pledge to you the first bite of my meat and the first drink from my cup
I pledge to you my living and my dying, each equally in your care
I shall be a shield for your back and you for mine
I shall not slander you, nor you me
I shall honor you above all others, and when we quarrel we shall do so in private and
tell no strangers our grievances
"This is my wedding vow to you.
This is the marriage of equals.

What do you guys think?

Handfasting can be part of the religious or civil wedding ceremony. The hands of the bride and groom are joined as in the familiar scene as the person officiating the ceremony asks "Who gives this woman to be wed?" and then takes her hand from her father or whoever is giving away the bride and clasps it to the hand of the groom. In olden days the priest or minister would wrap the clasped hands in the end of his stole to symbolize the trinity of marriage; man and woman joined by God. With God’s grace in time another trinity would be manifest; mother, father and child. The Celts have always been good at seeing things in threes. This symbolic binding together in marriage evolved into a the practice of wrapping the clasped hands with a cord or an embroidered cloth, usually made especially for that purpose. Handfasting in this manner is a legitimate part of a legally valid marriage. This is something I want to talk to my priest about. I think it would be a great way to incorperate the Irish heritage into our cerimony.

Here are some traditions I found and liked to, let me know if you can think of anymore?

• There is one wedding Irish tradition that states: 'Marry in May and Rue the Day' while another states: 'Marry in April if you can, joy for maiden and for man'.

• Lucky horseshoe. Irish brides used to carry a real horseshoe for good luck. (Turned up so the luck won't run out). You can get porcelain horseshoes which most Irish brides carry these days, or one made of fabric which is worn on the wrist

• Make-up bells. The chime of bells is thought to keep evil spirits away, restore harmony if a couple is fighting, and also remind a couple of their wedding vows. Giving a bell as a gift has become an Irish tradition. You could also have your greeters hand out tiny bells to your guests to ring as you process. (You might want to let them know when they're supposed to be rung - perhaps mention it in your program along with an explanation of the custom). Guests could also ring their little bells at the reception in lieu of clinking glasses.
• The bride does not wear new shoes lest the Fairies steal them away.
• It was unlucky to marry on a Saturday
• A man should always be the first to wish joy to the bride, never a woman
• The top tier of your wedding cake should be an Irish whiskey cake which is saved for the christening of your first baby. I've also heard of another custom which just ***e to my attention and will be
included in the next edition: a bottle of champagne is saved from the reception so that it can be used to 'wet the baby's head' at the Christening.
• Handfasting is a ceremony that some believe was practiced in remote areas where priests made infrequent circuit visits. There is some debate about whether the handfasting ceremony constituted a "real" and legal marriage, just without the benefit of clergy, or a "pre-marriage," or perhaps a public announcement of betrothal. Still others believe that it was a "trial marriage" that lasted a year and a day, after which time the couple could actually marry or part company. The "year and a day" is a time frame that was popularized in novels and purportedly was the period of time that a couple would have to be "married" before being granted the legal rights of marriage, such as inheriting land. There is little hard and fast resource material to support the "year and a day" concept, but as for handfasting, couples today practice it more as a neo-pagan, nonreligious alternative that an alternative religious ceremony.
• The Claddagh Ring has remained very popular as an engagement and/or wedding ring. The symbolism is quite lovely. The heart in the design symbolizes love longed to be shared with one's true love. The crown symbolizes undying loyalty and the hands symbolize friendship, which is, after all, the very foundation of love, with loyalty holding the two hands together. There are many legends about the origin of the Claddagh ring and true or not, the Claddagh has become an everlasting symbol of love and marriage
• The Horseshoe has long been a symbol of good luck in cross-cultures. Irish tradition has it that a horseshoe given as a wedding gift to the bride and groom and kept in their home will bring them good luck. The horseshoe must always be hung like the letter "U," so that the luck doesn't "drip out."
• Jumping the Broom is a custom known and practiced widely in the African-American community, where the broom serves as a symbol of hearth and home. The custom is also referenced both in Celtic and Irish wedding traditions and may have its roots in an ancient festival where women would "jump or ride a broom" to ensure the fertility of their crops
• As with most wedding, the cake is a focal point at an Irish weddings. Bakers can stay in theme by decorating cakes with shamrocks and green icing and, should the couple wish, an Irish cream filling (Irish Whiskey, whipped cream and sweetener) can be used

An Irish Wedding Blessing
You are the star of each night,
You are the brightness of every morning,
You are the story of each guest,
You are the report of every land.
No evil shall befall you, on hill nor bank,
In field or valley, on mountain or in glen.
Neither above, nor below, neither in sea,
Nor on shore, in skies above,
Nor in the depths.
You are the kernel of my heart,
You are the face of my sun,
You are the harp of my music,
You are the crown of my company.

Scottish Blessing of the Elements
Deep peace
of the running wave to you
Deep peace
of the flowing air to you
Deep peace
of the quiet earth to you
Deep peace
of the shining stars to you
Deep peace
of the spirit of peace to yo

More Irish traditions. This is to much fun to research, and its part of my heritage wich is great to!

THE CLADDAGH RING
Named after Claddagh, a fishing village in Galway (in Western Ireland), the Claddagh ring is handed down from mother to daughter and isused both as the betrothal and wedding ring. It is worn with the crowns facing inward, toward the wrist, on betrothal, and outward, toward the nail, upon marriage. Today, it is still used as a wedding ring and it is considered improper for a person to buy one for him or herself; it must be given as a gift.

STRANGE SUPERSTITIONS
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Irish believed that if the sun shone on the bride, it would bring good luck to the couple. It was also lucky to hear a cuckoo on the wedding morning or to see three magpies. After the wedding ceremony, it was important that a man and not a woman be the first to wish joy to the new bride.

LOCKING THE DOOR
Since Irish men were known for getting cold feet on their wedding days, once the bride and groom were in the church, the guests would lock the door to keep the groom inside to make sure he went through with the ceremony.

IRISH TOAST
The wedding party gathers around the bride and groom. All fill their glasses with mead and the newly wedded couple recites an Irish toast: "Friends and relatives, so fond and dear, 'tis our greatest pleasure to have you here. When many years this day has passed, fondest memories will always last. So we drink a cup of Irish mead and ask God's blessing in your hour of need." The guests respond: "On this special day, our wish to you, the goodness of the old, the best of the new. God bless you both who drink this mead, may it always fill your every need." Need more toasting tips? Check out Irish Toasts.

IRISH LACE
While bridal fashions in Ireland resemble the rest of the Western world, one distinctly Irish touch is Irish lace. Try to incorporate this beautiful fabric into a gown or veil. If that's too expensive, consider carrying a lace handkerchief in your bridal bag or hand them out as attendant gifts. Color scheme? Follow Irish heritage, of course, and go for green, white, and gold.

BAGPIPES AND KILTS
Lots of big Irish families have family members who are in pipe bands. So it's not unusual for them to hook up at a wedding and pipe the couple into the mass or at dinner. Popular tunes are the "Highland Fling" and the "Stack of Barley," as well as jigs, reels, and hornpipes. Not only do they sound good, they look good too. Most pipers wear Celtic kilts -- plaid skirts that their ancestors wore in medieval times. The Irish weren't allowed to wear them during British rule, so now it seems they slip them on for practically every special occasion, maybe in an effort to make up for lost time and to reclaim their stake in what is often regarded as a Scottish fashion statement.

LORD OF THE DANCE
Show off on the dance floor with a ceilidh, a traditional Irish set dance. Consider signing up for pre-wedding lessons -- for just you and your sweetie or for the whole bridal party. Keep in mind that some ceilidh dances are named for locations in Ireland such as the Kerry Set, the Seige of Ennis, while some waltz tunes include names such as "Galway Shawl", or "Home to Mayo" -- choose a song or dance to reflect your family's heritage or ancestral home. Be sure to share the special significance of your dance with your guests.

AN IRISH FEAST
The traditional Irish menu -- Irish soda bread, corned beef, and cabbage -- is perhaps not something you'd typically crave, but when cooked right and served up at a big wedding fete, it's positively delicious (not to mention that it all gets washed down with plenty of whiskey and Guinness Stout). And don't forget the traditional Irish wedding cake, a fruitcake filled with almonds, raisins, cherries, and spice and laced with brandy or bourbon. Want to bake it yourself? Here's a recipe.

THE MONTH OF HONEY
The word for honey is "meala" in Irish. "Mi na meala," the month of honey, refers to the month after the wedding when the newlyweds celebrated by drinking mead, a brew made of fermented honey. Following the wedding, a sufficient amount of mead was given to the bride and groom, along with special goblets, so they could share the unique brew for one full moon after their wedding -- and thus the term honeymoon was coined. It was believed that this delicate yet potent drink was the best way to ensure a good beginning for a new marriage, and it was also believed to endow powers of virility and fertility.

1. Select a date for the wedding. The last day of the year is considered an especially lucky time for an Irish marriage.

2. Choose claddagh rings for your wedding bands. These traditional Irish rings, when worn on the ring finger of the left hand with the heart facing in, tell the world your heart is taken forever.

3. Hire a piper to play at your ceremony. Contact your local St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee for help in finding one.

4. Ask a child to present a satin horseshoe to the bride at the conclusion of the ceremony. This represents good luck. Insert the horseshoe open end up (so the luck won't run out) into the bridal bouquet.

5. Honor the person who introduced you to each other with a special toast at the wedding. This tradition stems from the days when a matchmaker had that role.

6. Serve a traditional Irish wedding cake, which is a fruit cake filled with almonds, raisins, cherries and spice, and laced with brandy or bourbon. You can order this or make it yourself.

7. Sign up for ceilidh (dance) lessons for the bride and bridal party prior to the wedding to learn some Irish dances to perform at the ceremony.

8. Hire a band that can play popular Irish songs, such as "The Irish Wedding Song," "Oh Danny Boy," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," and "My Favorite Irish Rose."

9. Include a song or dance that reflects your family's specific heritage.

10. Tie harvest knots out of straw and decorate them with small flowers or bells to give to guests as favors. Attach a scroll explaining the significance, which is that young Irish men traditionally gave these to their girls to show their devotion.

11. Suggest your florist weave tiny harvest knots into your bouquet.

Tips:
Save the horseshoe from the wedding as a family heirloom to pass on to your children.

Remember the Irish tradition that a sunny day is lucky, and a rainy one is not. Hope for sun on your wedding day!

Well I spoke to my mom tonight, and she made some good points about the wedding. We arent in any rush to get married, we already live together, and we arent working at the moment so she said maybe its best to postpone the wedding. I dont like it, but I agree. So I think its back to its original date of Augaust 25 2007. Its only about five months, but hey, its five more months of planning i get, and its time to get some more money put aside. However the way this is going I might be a 2008 bride!

I went to three different stores. I would highly recommend at least that many. You get to try on a lot of different dresses plus you never know what you will find. Also, you'll find that you have different expereinces at each store. The last one I went to, they were so snotty that I was glad that I hadn't gone to that store first.

It is fun! Some of the dresses are so elegant. I had fun taking my neices (who are in the wedding) because they would pick out dresses for me to try on. Most of them were out of my price range, I wouldn't have picked them off the rack because of that but they don't look at price, they look at prettiness.

A church would be a good setting for your Irish theme wedding, or if the season and weather permit for it, a garden or meadow with a view of rolling green hills reminiscent of the Emerald Isle. You might ask around to see if anyone knows of a priest or minister with an Irish brogue who could perform the ceremony using Irish wedding traditions.

Since lace has long been popular in Ireland, a white lace bridal gown would be in keeping with this theme. You could add colored accents, such as an emerald tiara or necklace, or a mixture of wildflowers and shamrocks fastened in your hair. Put shamrocks in your bouquet, too. Real shamrocks tend to wilt fast when out of water, so faux might be a good choice. You can easily make your own with stiffened green fabric hot-glued to green floral wire.

A few Irish-language expressions of love would add unique flavor to your Irish theme wedding vows.

Give your Irishe theme wedding invitations an Irish style with elegant Celtic-knot patterns and a Celtic font. Or, if you prefer something more lighthearted, cut your invitations in a pot-of-gold shape, print rainbows on the fronts, and sprinkle fairy dust (glitter) inside.

You might hang an Irish blessing over the door for your guests to walk under as they enter. Many good examples can be found online.

Ivy grows rampant in Ireland. Faux ivy garlands hung on walls or arranged along tables would impart a fresh, cool look.

You might wish to try a traditional Irish wedding cake for your Irish theme wedding. This would be a dense fruitcake iced in white. You could make the top tier an Irish-whiskey cake and save it to share on your first anniversary. For a "lucky" cake, have the layers baked in a shamrock shape with shamrock charms inside.

Irish wedding traditions include feasts that are traditionally potluck. For real Irish flavor, serve traditional dishes such as corned beef and cabbage, or Irish stew and soda bread, washed down with mead (honey wine, sometimes flavored with fruit). Or, you could have sandwiches and cookies cut in a shamrock shape and serve "leprechaun punch." Use a lime-flavored powdered-drink mix for a color base and go from there.

The Irish love a good toast. You can find many to choose from online in English or in Irish. Have guests kiss "the Blarney Stone" before making speeches at the toast.

No Irish theme wedding can be complete without Irish music. This is at its best played live, so hire a fiddler or an Irish uillean (elbow) piper (the bagpipes we frequently hear are Scottish, not Irish), or an entire Irish band. A musician playing a metal-stringed Celtic harp would add an ethereal and authentic sound.

And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you;

May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings,
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.

May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.

Donna that would be great, I am looking into having pipers at the cerimony and the girls in green dresses. :D Thanks everyone.

The first cake almost looks like the design was made on that edible paper. You could have that done if you can find a design and print it out to the size you want (all the strips and the front design). Fit as many on a 8 1/2x 11 peice of a paper in the color you want and take it to your local Hy-Vee, Dahls, what ever grocery store that has a bakery. I know my Hy-Vee did one for a cake that I had for FH's birthday. Then I took it (sealed in a plastic bag) to Dairy Queen and had them put the design on the cake for me. Ask who ever does your cake about that, it might work if you want to use that cake.

Beautiful dresses Amanda! :) I love the red one...love the pattern on it. As for the silver dresses, I vote for the 1st one. My bridesmaid is kinda top heavy too (I read further you mentioned yours being top heavy :)) and tried one on like the 2nd one...and the **** area looked all stretched out and icky on her, she didn't like it and I didn't either. I have a pic of her in a similar dress, but you can't see the total front to see what I'm referring to..but I can show you if you'd like. :)

Dress number two. It looked very pretty, but still didnt fit right!
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b223/Canadorephoenix/DSCF0466.jpg
Here finally is dress number three. I love it and it fit great. Its a sweatheart, and it might not be the final choice but its still amazing.
Here is my BM Lisa in a dress we chose for her to try on, we would be getting it in green fo course.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b223/Canadorephoenix/DSCF0462.jpg
The next dress we love. Again we would get it in green. front view and side view.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b223/Canadorephoenix/DSCF0461.jpgWooo hooo!! Dress trying on time! Don't you just love this part?? I know I did! LOL I have to agree... I like the one you called the sweetheart one. You looked beautiful in it and the lacey deco. is beautiful too. :) The BM dress above, red one, is very similar to the ones I chose for my girls, except theirs has the split front. :)

I found them online, I might look for places that carry those designers and see if I can try them on. I dont want to order something without trying it on first, I would be afraid of getting it and it not looking good on me.

I was wondering ladies, how would you really class up this wedding to suite an evening time and still keep it authentic? Any ideas?

True to an Irish cerimony. I dont want ppl to leave thinking they have sat through a geography class but I want them to know they were at a celtic wedding.

One thing you could do to add a little history/ customs/ traditions, is have a few things in your program. Or do picture frames around the guestbook area that explains history and customs behind some of the things you are doing at your wedding. I am thinking about using scrapbook paper layered as table decor and writing different Irish blessings and toasts on each of them. It will give the guests something to do or talk about while at the table. I'm also thinking of doing a mini Irish flag in each of the centerpieces. If I can think of anymore ways I will let you know. If you are looking for a few more Irish/Celtic cake ideas, I found a few more toward the end of my journal.
Jenn
P.S. I really love the last dress! Lace is traditional Irish attire and that just looks beautiful!
