i am getting married in 6 weeks and my mother lives 400 miles away in a small city and we're having trouble finding the right dress for her, one that suits her size. she is 5'7" and is about a size 16-20 (185 lbs). all the dresses we look at online that are in her size don't have models who are overweight so it's a challenge to imagine what would actually look good on her. her legs are pretty thin and her torso is wide and bulky, so her breast and stomach sort of all mesh in together. would a two-piece work best for this body type or should we avoid layers and tiers...?
any ideas?
the wedding is outdoors in aug '05 - what colors are appropriate for an august outdoor wedding???

I think I would actually look more at stores like Catherine's - they actually use plus-sized mannequins in their stores. I don't like how catalog companies use little itty-bitty things to advertise clothes for larger women - it won't look the same on someone with a different body type.

is there any way for her to come visit you or you visit her for a week before the big day?? you two could go clowths shopping together and find something perfict. remember she doesn't have to match the bridal party she just needs to have something special for the day.
good luck and let us know how you fare :)

cahterines definitly, lane bryant and the avenue are all great stores. Catheines has the most "party" dresses it can be expensive but for something nice u will have to spend.

My FMIL is about that size... I'm trying to think of the name of the designer for her dress... their website is all skinnier models too, but the styles look amazing on her... it's .... it's ... crap... I'm gonna have to e-mail her and find out.
They have 3 piece outfits... dress, shell, and jacket, all really lightweight and flowy that are just... really good... and they look good when the jacket is off if she gets too warm.

It's Spencer Alexis. Their website is www.spenceralexis.com
Her dress isn't shown, but the general style is in movie 3. (The closest is the gold one.)
Her dress is a light lavendar dress. There are sheer inserts in the jacket that are a darker purple and help "show off" her chest a little more.

What about Speigel? My mom shops their catalog. I've never looked at it, so I can't comment on their models, but she buys a lot from them. She's purchased 2 or 3 dresses from them for the wedding...she's just waiting until she gets home next week to try them on so she can see which she likes the best.
