We are having an overseas wedding in Mauritius in May 2006. What do you think would be a good dress style? I am tiny - 5'1" - and "curvy - very". I am hippy, busty but have a nice neck (one thing in my favour anyway) and my arms aren't fat/flabby. My partner is a big man (6'3") so I need to make IMPACT so as not to be completely overshadowed by him. We have a choice of places to get married - beach, pool, terraces, garden - so a long dress is probably not a good idea as it could get dragged through sand and other things. I don't suit short-short dresses - not got the thighs for it. I want something I can wear for the celebration when we get back. I would prefer cream or ivory. Quite bosomy so not overkeen on strapless although definitely not out of the question. I have seen some beautiful dresses but nothing seems to be doing it for me yet. Oh, and I am in UK so would have to be able to ship to me if I fell in love with a specific dress. Style suggestions really welcome - I know you won't let me down - you are always so helpful and innovative. Thanks in anticipation. :)

try looking for a dress that is ankle length or doesn't have a train that you could shorten a bit to make it sweep around your ankles. A ballgown style dress would work for that if you want a little more formal.
If not, I saw a pretty dress on Alfred Angelo's website. Let me see if I can get it posted in here. couldn't get the picture to insert. try going to www.alfredangelo.com and select UK and informal/destination bridal gowns. It is style 1816. they actually photographed the model on the beach. It has a bit of a lace train, but I think it would work for what you are looking for.

Honestly, a long sheath will 'lengthen' your body and paired with heels will make you look taller. If you can find a dress that just barely reaches the floor when you are wearing your choice of footwear (or lack of!), that might not be too bad for the beach.

Thanks Keogh, Soz and Debbie. Unfortunately Debbie's pics haven't loaded - still got the red x in the box which right clicking is still not opening. I am petrified of looking like a sack of potatoes but both SoZ n Keogh's suggestions are good and well worthy of consideration. I have also seen some really nice dresses from links on the thread so just have to get out and wear away the rubber on my shoes - although that might make me even smaller!! Wonder if I could walk in 12 inch heels? Stilts perhaps? :)

I'm very busty too and it turns out strapless works best for me with the regular wedding a-line type dresses. (What I ended up with, not what I wish I could wear.)

I really love sheaths and I think that would be perfect as long as you don't have trouble finding bras... the boning from the corset I got would show through on mine and they just don't make cute little strappy ones my size. If that's not a problem for you AWESOME. I found a perfect one at a store, but I don't know the designer or I'd post it... it's a spaghetti strap ivory sheath with little viny flower beading down it... it's awesome and I'm in love with it and I want to lop my chest off so I can have it.

My sister and I also have problems with spaghetti straps, but we have "wrestler/fly swimmer" shoulders and mine are curved. (Encourage good posture early on and don't make it a chore... I lost control of my shoulders when I was 12 and it's not cool.)

i am getting married in 6 weeks and my mother lives 400 miles away in a small city and we're having trouble finding the right dress for her, one that suits her size. she is 5'7" and is about a size 16-20 (185 lbs). all the dresses we look at online that are in her size don't have models who are overweight so it's a challenge to imagine what would actually look good on her. her legs are pretty thin and her torso is wide and bulky, so her breast and stomach sort of all mesh in together. would a two-piece work best for this body type or should we avoid layers and tiers...?

any ideas?

the wedding is outdoors in aug '05 - what colors are appropriate for an august outdoor wedding???

I don't know if you'll get anything you like, but this website (http://www.igigi.com/page/100/CTGY/gala_col?source=Overture&kw=psd&OVRAW=plus%20size%20dresses&OVKEY=plus%20size%20dress&OVMTC=standard) and this website (http://www.elegantplus.com/Hot%20Deals/dresses.htm) shows dresses on bigger models.

I'm not sure what your mother likes, but what about something like this:

Many of the women here at work are bigger and they wear layers all the time - and they look nice!

As for your colors... what do you like? It is your wedding and you can choose/use any color you want. ;)

jcrew.com has some beautiful wedding dresses that would be perfect for beach weddings. Not sure about shipping overseas though, but they may be worth a look.

I'm going to a wedding this weekend where the bride is wearing the sophia short dress. She is about 5'5'' and full figured.

You have some wonderful choices for aug. summer colors are nice, such as light blue, my wedding was going to be in Aug '06 but now it's in june '06 and one of my colors is powder blue. Lights blue and pinks are great for a summer wedding.
