View Full Version : What would you ban

Ok, as brides we all have power if we decide to take it. I think someone in the music forum asked what songs would you ban. Well, I am stealing their idea. I just had to call and have flowers sent to the funeral home and I banned some flowers from the basket. So as brides to be, what flowers if they showed up at your wedding would you kill the florist over.
Here are mine: carnations, daisies, and baby's breath. I have alawys hated carnations. I was a flower girl once and was forced to wear this God awful yellow dress with a wreath of daisies and baby's breath in my hair. It was so itchy especially once you factored in the curls and can of Aquanet my mom used to make it all stay.

carnations... and I used to think baby's breath until I saw thins thing in Marths Stewart Weddings that was a dorr wreath of just baby's breath and it was so gorgeous. I wouldn't carry it though. I bet I can think of more too.

I don’t like carnations but they have a special meaning for me so I still allow them and actually ask for them. Daisy’s I hate them.

I agree with everyone else, carnations. I also told my florist no gerbera dasies becuase they use to be my favorite flower until they be***e so trendy and now I'm sick of them, the florist agreed with both

Hyacinths. I hate them, they're ugly, and everyone who finds out I'm having blue for my wedding color either asks me about them or suggests them.

I have not got a clue. I have not gotten to flowers yet, but I can guarantee that daisys will not be in it. I was thinking of having carnations intertwined in the older FG hair - French braid - only because I do not want it down that day (she is nine and has long enough hair to sit on) and the little FG will depend on how much and how thick her hair will be at that point. She will be 3 1/2 :)

Too much greenery. I was recently in my cousin's wedding and the bridesmaids flowers were so awful!!! Our dresses were this pale yellow color (buttercream, I think) and our bouquets has like 3 roses, daises, and a bunch of weeds. I don't exactley know what all the green crap was, but it literally looked like they went out to the side of the highway and scooped up some weeds and daiseys and tied them together. It had these little green springs (grass maybe???) that stuck up above the rest and was so annoying because it would touch your chin or nose if you weren't careful. Sorry to rant but it was just awful!

I have always felt that carnations where funeral flowers. They were my Nana's favorite; she passed away when I was 17. I don’t like them but I still want a few carnations in my wedding to honor her. My favorite flowers are stargazer lilies

ROSES!!!
i know this sounds out of wak for all of you but unfortunutly i am allergic to roses :(:(
I like a lot of different flowers. However, the one flower I hate is the iris. I think they are ugly and will not use them in my wedding or reception flowers. Good thing I am doing a lot of the flowers myself so I know which to use and which ones I do not want to use.
Unlike many of you, I like the carnation and would use it in my wedding flowers.

I love stargazers and I think they smell great but they remind my mom of funerals so i think she keeps dropping hints so I do not use them. Overall I love all flowers and some greenery too

NO GREEN CRAP!!! the ceremony site is outside in a park and its nothing but green! I actually stopped on the side of the road the other day and pulled up fistfulls of wild flowers and put them at the park so maybe next year there will be something colorful there!
and no carnations...

What are those white lilies with the hot pink in the middle of each petal and it goes into the middle of the flower? Whatever they are, I'd have to ban those. I adore them...they are gorgeous, but I am horribly allergic. If I get within 'smelling-range', I get an instant headache. It's awful because it starts to hurt im my nose and just grabs my brain and squeezes. And half of the vendors at the bridal shows I've been to have them in displays, so I had to make my mom or Gene go and get what I wanted from them because I couldn't get close.

I also love magnolia's but my florist said they bruise with just the touch of your finger (skin oil I suppose)...then turn brown. I didn't want to disappoint you :o , so if you do decide on them, keep them hands free!!! Even better if you are using the silk ones...Good luck they are beautiful!
I dislike carnations alone, but when in a bunch they are beautiful, I think my dislike comes from the fact that I've always seen them @ funerals. I love most all flowers! Bird of paradise is one of my fav for a summer wedding!

Oh, yeah...I forgot about that. They do bruise easy. I had a magnolia tree in my yard when I lived in VA. Also be careful if you are sensitive to scent...they tend to have a strong odor. They are, unfortunately, another flower I can't bear to be around.

I am not a carnation fan, and will not have them.
Roses as long as they are NOT red or pink are ok.
I have trouble with some sort of lilly and allergies, I will have to go & check so I can get rid of that flower too!

Yes, the bird of paradise can be red. They come in several colors actually. My mom has a bird of paradise bush in her yard and the flowers are white. With the exception of the white one, I think all of the other colors actually have 2 colors to them. My fav is the one that is orange and it has purple-y/blue accents.
Here's a pic of one...

I just found some of those in my yard last night too! (we recently moved and the person who owned the house previously has a JUNGLE growing) we're starting to thin everything out but I walked back by this one boulder that had flowers growing there, but hadn't bloomed yet and last night there was a beautiful stargazer lily!

I've only seen them used in centerpieces and other room arrangements. I don't think I'd use them in a bouquet. They're pointy and you could put out an eye!

I have seen birds of paradise mixed with other tropical flowers and greenery and it looks nice in bouquets if that is the look you are going for. I think I decided that I am carrying roses, calla lilies, peonies, and lily of the valley. The girls are carrying sweet peas. I am decorating the church with black and white roses and dahlias. I haven't thought much about the reception yet except for lots of potted palms. I swear to God almighty...if there is a carnation, daisy, babies breath, mum, or ivy anywhere I will open up a can of whoop ***** on that poor florist!

Yup, we did (well... other's did and I'm happy about it).
I think it takes multiple (or perhaps "enough") people complaining to the moderators about them.

I am going against the grain here and having an almost all greens bouquet. It will be predominantly mixed ferns with a center of cream ranunculuses. Saw this in the winter(?) Martha Stewart Wedding and fell in love with it.
I thought it was going to be cheaper because they are just ferns - boy was I wrong! Total sticker shock. Apparently the ferns in the bouquets and centerpieces aren't the kinds you find growing in the woods in your backyard! And I thought they were just weedy-type things!!!

You're just about in time for Lilacs! They're not usually blue, but I love them so I had to say something.
I'm using blue flowers and there actually were a decent amount of choices, I just didn't like most of them. We're having very simple bouquets with white and blue flowers.
The bridesmaids' bouquets and groomsmen boutenniers will be made of:
white stock
light and dark blue delphiniums
caspia
Ryan and I will also have Bells of Ireland; I like them, they're supposed to bring good luck, and our wedding has (ended up with) a Celtic theme.
I'd suggest talking to a bunch of florists and finding out their suggestions... Blue flowers aren't as widespread as other colors, but they're out there. I'll post pictures after my wedding (7/16) so you can see mine (hopefully they turn out good... flowers and pictures).
A word of warning about mine: I was told none of them dry well, so if you want to save your flowers, they're not a good selection. However, from what I understand, delphinium and larkspur are the same plant and you can find dried larkspur everywhere, so... who knows.

My colors are pink and white, so I'm using sweet pea and narcissus flowers for decoration and then calla lilies for the bouquettes.

When the time comes have your florist check into sterling roses. They are a blue/silver color. I think they are very pretty.

Since your wedding is in May you might want to look at tulips too. I know they have several blue-ish colored varieties.

You are so sweet :o
Yeah, I was worried about what I would be stuck with too, especially since I know nothing about flowers... it took a lot of looking at bouquets and pictures and flowers to realize that maybe I could have something I liked.
I ended up making a web site for the florist (long-distance planning for those who don't know) of all the pictures and colors and stuff I found... she told me that some of them were bad pictures and the colors weren't true, but at least she knew where to start with suggestions.
Okay... I will repeat. THE SITE WAS MADE FOR THE FLORIST. I did not really add much else and haven't worked on it since... like November. The job info is almost completely outdated, the picture's bad... I'M ONLY PUTTING IT ON HERE TO SHARE THE BLUE (and apparently purple) FLOWERS I FOUND! okay... so here it is.

Oh yeah, and everyone has to check out Kevin's website... it's my rule. The link is on the main wedding page under special thanks. He's Ryan's (currently only) groomsman and he's a great friend, an amazingly unique photographer and artistic welder, and is always there for you whenever you need him. I'm not sure if there's a link to Gregory Paul's website or his band The Autumndivers, but he's a musician (obviously) who is very unique as well and saving our lives for the ceremony. He's agreed to let us steal some of his sound equipment and we're going to use some of his music (including from an unreleased album) for our reception.

Ok I had to post to this because the only "thing" I would ever truely ban is my FH's sister's husband!! My SIL and their children are more than welcome at our wedding...in fact at my FH's request (not that this is his request but if it was) I would have SIL as my only bridesmaid..(not including our daughter) But her husband is not welcome!!  ..(I know this sounds bad but even FH agrees!!!)

I keep thinking of flowers in the blue, purple, silver family. My recommendation would be to go to your local book store preferably one like Barnes and Noble. Pull a bunch of wedding books off of the shelf that deal with flowers. Almost every one will have a section that breaks flowers down by color.
