Our wedding colors are bright summer colors and I want to use fantail goldfish as part of the centerpieces for the dinner tables. HAs anyone seen neat ideas for this or have any advice? Thanks, I've only got 50 days or so and still have so much to do :o

Ohhh! I was at a wedding that did this! We used the crimp-top ivy bowls (1.00 each at most crafty stores like Michaels) and filled them with water, and put some marbles in the bottom and then added goldfish! They swam around in there and looked really cute :) Depending on your colors you can use food coloring (won't hurt the fishie) to dye the water a little if you wish as well :)

I don't know anything at all about fish...were you planning to use real ones? I think that is such a cute idea...let me know so I can brainstorm for you! Or clue me in on what is a fantail? :)

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS
First, transporting fish causes them a great deal of stress and stress kills fish.
Second, people will be inclined to feed the fish at their tables and overfeeding kills fish.
Third, what will you do with the fish after the wedding?
Events that use fish as decorations often end up with a lot of dead fish. You don't want dead fish decorating your tables, do you?
Goldfish are live animals that experience stress and pain. Please do not treat them like disposable decorations.

We thought about this as well. We asked the pet store what to do - they packed the fish for us to transport and we put them in the bowls the same way you would put them in your tank at home. Then when the night was over, each child got to take one home as a "favor" - the rest were put in my friend's goldfish pond at home and are HUGE now! There are ways to take care of them :) One other thing we did to prevent them from being fed was to tie tulle over the top - it allows oxygen to get in but doesn't allow people to feed them :)

fan tail fish are the ones whose tails are longer and look fancy.
AS for what we will do with the fish they will be taken home by a few people who have said they would love to have them. I have a lot of friends with goldfish tanks and who have saved sickly looking fish that I had had, they know what to do. And they are really not being transported very much.

That’s a great idea. I didn’t agree with live fish at first either, but if you do take all the steps to make sure that they are not being harmed and have somewhere for them to go after words I don’t see a problem. I’m such a huge animal activist

I am thinking about doing this for centerpieces too...let me know how it works out!
I did hear a horror story about someone who did this...they set up the hall the night before the wedding and put the fish in their bowls on the tables...the reception hall turned off the heat during the night and all of the fish died from being cold, so if you do this just watch out for them so you don't spend all that money on dead fish (and I'm sure the smell was less than pleasent!)

Cool.... The fish are safe! I could see 3 slim cylinders in various sizes (just for the height and dimensions) with the fish ... and some plastic ice (can get @ dollar tree) on the bottom to compliment the color....I love the idea of gold fish bowls with tulle!
I think the ideas are endless when choosing the type of holder...

Good to see someone standing up for the little guys on here who can't talk. I love all animals little and big.

Since so many people are saying they know about animals, what is the appropreat way to clean the glass beads to put at the bottom of the bowl? Boil the beads so they are clean?

I used to keep fish. I usually just rinsed the beads or gravel or whatever was at the bottom with very very hot water. That cleans it well enough. A word to the wise...do NOT use regular kitchen sponges to wipe your fish tanks or bowls. They contain chemicals to inhibit bacteria growth that are toxic to our finned friends.

one fish 2 fish red fish gold fish, ha ha, fish are cute but remember with out oxygen for some time they can die. Are you putting a candle in the water? because the wax is going to drip down and the fish will have less room to swim.. we could always have a sushi bar, and have people teach you to fish, instead of giving u fish, ya know that whole thing of teach a man to fish he eats forever give him a fish he eats today . ok bad joke gone wrong

I was at a wedding where they did this. Firstly it's a cute idea, but I had a really hard time eating my meal, as these fish were struggling to stay alive. I'm a huge animal lover, and wasn't fond of this kind of table decoration. As for the couple who were married, she is a marine biologist....and she had difficulty keeping the fish alive during the recpeiton! I highly recommend NOT to do this. Some of the other guests found it disturbing to have eyes watching them as they ate. Her idea was to give the fish to the children who were at the recpetion, to take the 100 gold fish off her hands. But, the parents and the kids didn't really want to take home "half dead" fish. The fish do become very stressed from excessive movement, and transporting them from the pet store to the reception site is highly stressful. Secondly, even though gold fish are hardy...eventually the water requires the proper bacteria and PH levels to maintain healthy fish, and it is highly unlikely that the water that you maybe using will have the proper levels.
It's a nice idea, but I'm sure that you will come up with a better and more beautiful idea then the possiblitiy of dead fish floating in rose bowls during your reception.

This is a really cute idea, but I personally wouldn't do it JUST IN CASE something happened to one of the fish. I figure I have enough to worry about that day, why add one more variable that is out of my control. Even with perfect care, one of the fish could already be sick. Just like I am not doing an outdoor weeding because I can't control the weather.
The other thing is, I am also a huge animal lover (just check the threads where balloon releases come up) and I know very little about fish. If the girls on here are saying it is stressful on the fish...I believe them and wouldn't take the chance of hurting the fish.

Yeah, it's a cute idea, and if you have someone to take them afterwards, then that's great. But if you really want to do this, I'd recommend buying them ahead of time and keeping them in a tank at home. This way you have time to get their water just right for them and you can just use the water from the tank for the centerpieces. Fish can be very sensitive to changes in their environment, so something as simple as changing their water can upset them.
