I was just wondering what you guys were doing with you wedding dress. I dont see a point in preserving it, but I do want to keep it. I'm going to make a baby blanket out of it that will be passed to each one of my children. It’s funny when I tell people I want to cut my wedding dress up when I’m done with it, but I think this is such an awesome idea. I was wondering if anyone else has any unique ideas for their dress

I am going to keep my dress - I'm hoping that maybe someday I'll have a daughter - and its not so much that I'll want her to wear it, but I want that option to be open to her should she want to take it - and if not, maybe she'll be crafty and want to make something out of it :)

I have absolutely no clue... I don't really want to save it because I'll never use it again. I really don't want a daughter (girls are way too much trouble), so I don't see the point in saving it... plus I've been told that my dress doesn't look good on most people and it's rarely tried on and hasn't been ordered (in ivory at least) since I ordered it in September.

I may make something out of some of the beadwork/lacing on the train... I thought about selling it on ebay, but it wasn't that expensive to begin with, so I'm not convinced it will be worth the bother... Maybe I'll just post it on message boards as a free dress :p

I'm definately interested in other people's ideas. I hadn't really thought about it that much and I'm getting close to it being an important decision.

That's a great idea - to make baby blankets. I will consider that.

But how do you know how many pieces to cut your dress up into? Or are you absolutely sure you will only have __ number of kids?

I was planning on either

1. selling my dress or
2. dying it another color so I could wear it again to formal events

But now that you put that idea into my head, maybe I will turn the bottom half into a formal skirt (dye it and alter it) and the top half into baby blanket quilt squares. hmmm...

Well, I’m going to make only one blanket and have it passed to each child is my plan. I’m hoping to have them far enough apart that, the first wouldn’t be using it anymore. I don’t have all the details worked out. If my first child wants to keep it i guess they can. I’m sure both grandmas will be more than happy to make special baby blankets for the other ones.

Or I could just put a few squares into each blanket with other fabric from a fabric store. So the blanket would still be made out of the dress just not as much. Does that even make sense? lol

I am preserving mine and putting it in the closet. Who knows maybe one day I'll have a girl in my life who thinks it is special enough to wear. ANother idea I though of is this...several years ago my aunt's house burnt down taking with it her wedding dress and my 3 cousins' dresses. The trunk they were in prevented the dresses from being totally destroyed. So my aunt took them to a very talented lady who made dolls out of the dresses. There wasn't much of any of them left but all four women still wanted to keep their special dresses.

Actually, that reminds me! My mother gave me a doll that used to belong to my great grandmother as a child. She told me that my great aunt had made the petticoat out of another relative's wedding dress. I had totally forgotten about that, but I thought it was really cool when I found out... maybe I'll have mine made into a little outfit for her and my other dolls or something... I'm sure 100 years from now, one of my relatives will hear the story of the dress and think it's neat too.

I loved my mom's dress when I was little, but It was too big for me, so she made it in two small dresses(one for me and one for my sister) and matching dresses for our dolls! it was so cute!
But I have no idea what to fo with mine. :D

I was thinking about selling mine, but now I like the doll idea very much.
I'm not into keeping mine for my daughter some day as I don't want her to
feel bad for not wearing it. My mother offered hers to me, but it's not my
style and I felt so bad for turning her down - knowing that she must've
dreamed about me wearing her dress :(

Exactly. I hated my mother's wedding dress and hoped and prayed that she'd never offer it to me. It's one of the reasons I told Ryan we had to have a summer wedding; it's a heavy longsleeve dress with a high collar.

I think I really like the doll dress idea... Marcia, you may be out of luck.

When I was little my mom let us use her dress for dress ups. It was so much fun wearing the big long dress and playing with it. I have so many great memories from that. It got covered in grass stains and tore up so we threw it out after a little while but it was lots of fun. I dont know what I will do with mine

I used to dress my brother up in the yellow flower girl dress from my mom's wedding. Luckily, it didn't scar him for life. :D We used her shoes too. I can't picture an actual gown though... well... hers was kinda sheathy, but I almost feel lost in mine as an adult, I can't imagine being 5-10 and managing it!

Sounds like a blast... and another good way for me to fall and crack a jaw ;)

I really have not thought about what I am going to do with mine. My FI niece is 16 so maybe in a few years she'd like to wear it. In my linen closet at home I have both my Mom's and my Nana's dresses. I wanted to wear Nana's (It is so elegant, although 65 years old or so), but when I had it looked at to see if they could do any alterations they said that it was too far gone. I am thinking of having Christening Gowns made up out of both of them, and if my siblings ever get married and have kids they could do the same thing. Maybe I will have doll dresses made out of them as well.

Great ideas guys. Thanks :)

I plan on preserving it, but I haven't really thought any further on it.

Sort of on the same subject...I was MOH in my best friends wedding. Now she will be MOH in my wedding and her 2 little girls will be my flower girls. I cut up my MOH dress and wrapped 2 baskets (each from when I was a flower girl) with the fabric and then embellished with beads and such for my flower girls to carry in my wedding.

Funny you should ask about this. My first wedding was in 1970 and my dress had the lacey angel sleeves, long satin ribbon under the empire waist topped off with a lace mantilla and long lace trimmed veil. It cost a whopping $110 out the door! Anyway, I never had it cleaned; I just folded it up with lots of tissue and put it in a plastic bag inside the original boxes. Well, in 35 years the dress has put on miles, sat in closets, storage and lately in my garage where the cats thought it made a great bed!

Well, I'd been dieting and working out a lot lately for two reasons 1) we're boaters and I didn't want ass (isstance) getting into the boat and 2) my sons wedding June 25th. Anyway, my dad ***e up for the wedding and I was moving the darn thing, AGAIN and decided to see if it still fit. It did! I asked my dad if he remembered it and he said yes and the fact that my sleeves fluttered all the way down the aisle. By the way, except for one little water mark it is in outstanding condition.

So, even though I have two sons who are now married and obviously did not need the dress I am glad I've kept it. I (so far) have one granddaughter and who knows, maybe someday she will use all or part of it! :)

I never even thought of that! I probably wouldn't have fit into it! The one time in our lives we're happy to have these boulders. :p

These are some awesome ideas! Keep 'em coming... I'm sure my dress has enough material for a couple things.
