Anybody been to Hawaii? Does anyone have any suggestions as to good place to stay (preferrably not that expensive (meaning not over $115/night)) on Oahu?

Have you talked to any travel agencies? They usually have great suggestions. I recommend AAA if you have a membership.

I have not been impressed with any of the travel agencies here locally. They either want to try to put us into a 4 or 5 star hotel (which is way beyond our budget) or try to talk us into going somewhere other than Hawaii.

There might be a reason that the travel agents are giving you that advice. My degree is in hospitality management and so I have had a bit of training in the travel agency area. The agent knows you will have to spend a pretty penny on airfare, so their thought might be that they don't want to put you in a dump after spending that much on airfare. I have also heard that it is very expensive to eat. The agent may be suggesting a different location because he/she feels you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere.

True....but I'm not keen on spending my honeymoon on the Redneck Riviera (which has been suggested to us by two travel agents....although they have called it "Gulf Shores")

I'm getting married in Maui May 2, 2005. I have heard that it's expensive for food and accommodations but I still want to go. I found a couple web sites that might help you with the pricing of Hotels (they have pictures). I hope this helps. Good luck! :)

Yes, the Redneck Riviera is a nice place to visit when all others are exhausted :P Naw, its not so bad anymore - its actually pretty nice - but that's not the point - the point is that you don't want to go there!
I would check out websites for hotels - marriott and hilton etc. Check out discounted sites like priceline and expedia as well - see if you can do it cheaper on your own.

Do you have any friends or family that own timeshare? They could exchange it for a resort in Hawaii as a wedding gift for you. The only problem is you need to that pretty fara in advance and I don't know ehn your wedding is.

Our wedding is 14 January 2006. But we probably won't take our honeymoon until May.

My family is (I'm the most financially secure of any of them) poor so none of them owns timeshares.

Thank you! :D

You mentioned that you would probably be going in May (2006?); I hear that it's just beautiful that time of year. Have you been to the Hawaiian Islands before? I haven't so I'm extra excited. What are you doing for your wedding? Have you thought about cutting some cost and doing it in Oahu? I know that sounds silly but I only paid $1200.00 for:
Licensed Minister
Romantic Beach Setting
2 Beautiful Wedding Leis
Wedding Certificate
Hand Tied Bridal Bouquet
Photography - 36-4x6 prints (35mm format)*
Includes 2 Complimentary 8x10's
Informal Presentation Album
Coordination/Marriage License Appointment
Wedding Cake - 6" Tier
Alcohol Free Champagne
2 Personalized Champagne flutes
Table Setting
On-site Wedding Coordinator
*Please inquire about negatives
3 hour Limo

To me that's not bad. Just a thought. I attached my wedding location on here as well. Anyway if you need anything just let me know I will be happy to help.

Thank you,
Melinda

We can't do a destination wedding because then none of those important to us would be able to attend. It's a nice thought and I appreciate the suggestion, but it just isn't what Jennifer has in mind.

Hey-hello to a fellow person in Indiana! I am in Fort Wayne

Not to try to change your mind but have you and Jennifer ever thought of Cancun? It is alot cheaper and yet still really nice. I know it is different from the whole Hawaii thing but you get alot more for your money with somewhere like Cancun.

Something to also think about is since you are not taking your honeymoon right after your wedding check out when the slow times are for Hawaii or where ever you decide to go and you can almost always get better pricing on their slow season.

I've been researching Hawaii for our honeymoon (yes, I think I've changed my mind, again!), and I found some pretty decent rates on travelocity.com. Roundtrip airfare for both of us, 8 night hotel stay, and all taxes for $1700. That was flying into Honolulu and staying on the main island. Other islands were a little more, but not by much. I think the most expensive island was around $2500.

Always nice to run into a fellow Hoosier! :)

As mentioned on another thread, we've decided to pull a vacation 180. We're going to Germany instead to visit friends because it will save us money (our friends have offered to put us up and we can travel around much cheaper on the trains and see far more, and stay much longer (2 weeks is the plan at this point) than we could even consider doing in Hawaii).

The reason for the delay in the honeymoon is because I am in college (or rather I will be as of next month) and the slow times for somewhere like Hawaii coincides with when I will be in school. The weather in Germany doesn't get nice until around May anyhow and the only other 2 week uninterrupted stretch I have off is in December over the Christmas break and I don't have the desire to spend my holidays fighting my way through the Munich Airport. It will be a much needed vacation at this point because between working, doing research at the university (basically a second job), studying, preparing for Jen to give birth to our child in September, running as a vol. firefighter and trying to help Jen plan this wedding (which I am doing the logistics for, so I get to do all the real FUN (note the sarcasm) stuff) I may well be completely stark raving mad by the time May 2006 rolls around.
