View Full Version : Making your own bridal veil
Ok here is the scoop when I went looking for my dress and veil this past weekend I was astonished to find a veil I really liked -- however, the price tag was $199. So I have decided to get a pattern and make my own veil. I bought the pattern and material today for the veil for the cost of $23.53 which did not include any of the beads my uncle will have me buy when we get together. After I make the veil part I will then have my uncle, who does beadwork, place the beads and sequins on the veil. Once I get the dress on April 16, 2005, when it should be in because we had to order it, my uncle and I will go shopping for the beads that will match the dress and he will do all of the beadwork. After everything is bought then I will have a veil similar to the one that was $199 for a fraction of the cost.

I did the same thing only I have been hand sewing my own beads. It took be 6 hours to finish half of the fingertip length veil now I just need to do the blusher part!!! I spent $10.00 on mine versus $119. Way to go savvy brides!!!

Too bad you didn't have an uncle or someone to hand sew the beads on. This seems like it is going to save me a lot of time. Plus, he works with glass beads all the time so he knows what he is doing and can come up with a good pattern to match the dress.

My mom and I are making my veil too. I am using this tulle that has an amazing shimmer to it, I have no idea what it's called. I'm edging it in narrow alencon lace with pearls (hobby lobby, $3/yard, 5 yards exactly for my fingertip length veil) and the lace will match the alencon on the dress. I think I'll probably sew on a few pearls too but not a lot - the lace on the edge is heavy already!

I made my own also...It cost me $25 when finished...it's a double finger tip & cathedral...I have added my own swarovski crystals and fresh water pearls to make it catch some attention! Some may call me cheap...I call myself economically efficient! :p

Its not cheap - its smart and economical :) I mean, its why we shop around for deals - why pay more for something when you don't have to? I'm all about getting the best price - even if I have to throw in some elbow grease to make it work :)

I give you a lot of credit, I am not talented enough to make my own veil, but I respect that you can, and I think that is great! It's a great way to save a couple of hundred dollars!Congratulations!

Do you have someone in your family or a close friend that sews? If so, then ask them if they wouldn't mind making your veil. It takes maybe two hours, depending on what kind of veil you want, to sew the veil. The beading takes a while longer but can be done by someone who likes to sew. The veil pattern I got is very simple and can be done by someone who usually doesn't sew.

Would you mind scaning that pattern and mailing a copy to me? My best friend and maid of honor just got engaged, and I think she will be looking for a veil pattern. It would really be appreciated!!!

I will see if it will scan. However, the pattern is a McCall's pattern in the envelope and that which a person purchases from a store. McCall's has a lot of different patterns for veils which are usually in the books at the stores in fabric departments.

Hello veil making friends!
I just happened upon this forum while I was looking at sites that would tell me how in the world to make a veil! Does anybody have any suggestions on how to make one easily? I don't have a sewing machine, but I am thinking of making my veil - I think an elbow length (30"?) at this point. I think I would like some type of edge on it - like satin ribbon or cord or something, and possibly sparkles or beads. I have to figure out which dress I am buying before I figure out if I want beads though. Does anybody have any patterns or suggestions they want to offer me? I will probably either go out and buy a pattern or try to find one online or at the library, but you know, if we're cutting costs, let's get serious about it and try to find a free pattern! ;) Thanks for your help!

I didn't have a sewing machine either but spending $100.00 on up was not an option....I purchase an already trimmed veil $12.00 from hobby lobby and just added the cathedral myself with tulle, nylon thread onto a comb.
For the sparkles you could choose hotfix <<--(very important) rhinestones or the swarovski (crystals or pearls) <<-- (can be found on ebay a lot cheaper than stores) and a hotfix heater attachment $10.00 @ hobby lobby "stone styler" ...I just want to warn you that if this heater touches your veil it will burn a hole so be quick when you apply!
Or should you choose adding pearls...just stitch them with the nylon thread

Yeah, I have been to that site and have it bookmarked, because it seemed like a good one. It's good to get confirmation though. Thanks! Say, I found one source (on eBay, actually), but I was wondering if any of you know where I might be able to find just a plain metal comb to put the veil on. I attached a picture of what I'm talking about. I can't seem to find them anywhere (except for from this eBay person). Does anybody know where they come from?!? It's such a mystery! Even the eBay person doesn't know - she gets them from a seamstress who gets them from some mysterious place. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hello. The bridal store I bought my dress at, wanted to sell me a veil for $130 and a tiara for $140. I am not good at making things, so I looked online. I bought my veil from www.veilshop.com. I just received it, and it is perfect. I only paid $40.00 for it. They have a ton of veils to choose from. So if you want to get a decent priced veil (and not have to make your own) that's a good site to check out.
P.S. Got my tiara in Vegas (The Excalabur) for $25.00! :p

I have bought the fabric, cut as necessary, and attempted to sew on a few beads. My problem is that to sew on the 2mm bead, there is just too much thread, and it is noticable. How do you do the beading and not have this problem? I am about to go for the super glue.
I did the same thing only I have been hand sewing my own beads.

I am planning on making my own veil as well. A friend of mine made hers a couple years ago and it was beautiful. Although she has always been talented, she had never worked with beads before. I figured if she can do it I can too. I have placed an order for Swarovski crystals and some pearls with Astral Beads (www.astralbeads.com) - they had the lowest prices I could find on-line and no minimum order requirement. Very helpful as I am not sure how many of each I need exactly! :p

nle5 (and anyone else interested), check this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5378834410) link out. It is a link to an eBay auction, which you may or may not be ineterested in, but if you click on "ask seller a question" on the right hand side of the page, you can ask her about getting a comb as well. I would put her e-mail address up here, but I don't want to without her permission. The woman selling the stuff is named Julie and she's very sweet. You can just tell her that Abby sent you. She will probably know who you are talking about! I think she said she would sell me a tulle wrapped comb for $2.50 and if you don't mind it just going in a padded envelope the shipping is only $1.50. If you wanted it in a box it would be $3.75. I hope this helps!

I too had considered making a veil, well actually my mom was going to make it, she is a really good seamstress, but we were having trouble fnding the metal combs, crystals to sew on, fine bridal tulle (all we could find was the craft type tulle since we don't have much for fabric stores around here) , so I ended up looking on ebay and found the exact same one I had tried on with my dress at Davids that was $169, for $50 which included shipping and it was new with all tags and still sealed in the original factory plastic. So ebay ended up working great for me!
I too have looked at things on ebay for the wedding and found my tiara their. I already have the material for my veil and I am waiting to get with my neighbor so we can put the veil together. She had the idea of attaching the veil to the tiara combs to see if the tiara would hold the veil. I hope it will since I am having a problem finding a comb for the tiara. Ebay is a wonderful place to order from as long as you make sure the seller has a high approval rate from other people who have purchased from the seller.

Hey, I just wanted to update a little and let you brides know that I happend upon a website that has those metal combs I was talking about before. The combs are really nice - much better than the plastic kind. If you have tried the expensive wedding store veils on, you probably know what I am talking about, but anyway, if you want to purchase a metal comb to mount your veil on, here is the website to buy one. You have to register and get a password or something to get more information, but check it out (http://www.goodhairdays.com/twisted-wire-metal-sidecombs.htm)!

Awww... that's so nice!
Moving on to something not so nice (I hate to break the mood), but I think this is important. Imagine if this was happening to you just days before your wedding (and I hope that is not the case for any of you)! As brides, we need to do something to help our fellow brides! Sorry it's so long, but check it out (it's too long for one post, so it is continued in a second post):
FROM: Denise & Alan Fields, authors, BRIDAL BARGAINS.
Web: http://www.bridalbargainsbook.com
As many of you know, Discount Bridal Service has closed and will file
for bankruptcy shortly. Their Baltimore retail shop, Martin’s has closed
as has the company’s tuxedo stores, which went under the name A Perfect
Fit.
As authors of the book BRIDAL BARGAINS and the only consumer advocates
for brides, we have been reporting on this situation and are attempting
to help brides who have been caught in this mess. Here is the latest
news we have today:
1. New: DBS details bankruptcy in news release
Late this afternoon, DBS/Martins issued a press release with more
details on the closing and bankruptcy. We have posted it here:
http://www.windsorpeak.com/bridalbargains/dbs6.html
2. Baltimore update: store will not open Saturday, despite TV reports.
A recent TV news report on the Martins/DBS bankruptcy erroneously
reported that the Baltimore-based retail store would re-open Saturday so
brides could claim goods. That is not true, according to DBS attorney
Constance Hare. She wrote in an email to BRIDAL BARGAINS today:
“All special order merchandise was either picked up by brides during
the month of June or shipped to brides this week. The only inventory
remaining at the stores is store inventory, not special order
merchandise.”
Furthermore, in a DBS statement released today (July 13), the company
said:
“During the period from June 15 through July 2, Martin's contacted
approximately 475 brides to pick up their special order bridal gowns that
were being held by Martin's. Over 400 gowns were picked up during that
period, with the remaining dresses shipped to the brides this week.”
Despite this, we have received several reports from Baltimore brides
who were neither contacted nor received their paid-for merchandise. Also:
we have heard from Baltimore brides whose gowns are not due until Sept
or October; in those cases, the dresses never arrived to Martins (the
orders were placed this spring). Many of these brides paid by check.
Sadly, the only recourse these brides will have is to file a claim with
the bankruptcy court.
3. “Comparable gowns” now arriving---what to do?
According to Discount Bridal Service, the company this week shipped out
540 “comparable” gowns to brides. These gowns were NOT what they
ordered, but
”of equal or greater value of similar style in the correct size and
color. Those brides also received information regarding their original
orders, including the name and phone number the manufacturer, the order
number and the account number so that they could contact the manufacturer
directly if they were not satisfied with the replacement gown.”
So, what should you do if you get one of these “comparable gowns”?
First, open it and take digital pictures of the dress---the inside tags,
the box it came in, etc. Brides who have received these boxes indicated
to us the gowns are NOT the same brand they ordered, but similar in
style. If you do NOT want this dress, you need to document the situation
for your credit card company in order to dispute the charge (you ordered
a Brand X gown, but got Brand Y, etc). Keeping the dress doesn’t
diminish your rights to dispute any credit card charge (in fact, your credit
card issuer may want to see the dress as proof of the problem). If you
send the gown back to DBS, it will simply come back to you as the
company isn’t receiving shipments any longer. Bottom line: ask your credit
card company how they want you to proceed with this “comparable” dress
box.

4. Gowns held hostage: we need your help!
Our focus here at BRIDAL BARGAINS has now shifted to try to get dresses
held hostage in this bankruptcy to brides. A bit of background: in most
cases, Discount Bridal Service/Martins ordered the gowns directly from
bridal designers and manufacturers. Since the company experienced
financial problems, however, most of these gowns (for weddings in the next
few months) were NOT shipped to DBS but are now hanging in a
manufacturer’s warehouse.
We have put out a call to all bridal manufacturers to release these
gowns directly to brides at the gown’s WHOLESALE price plus shipping. Why
wholesale? Because that’s the amount DBS/Martins would have paid the
manufacturers for the goods had they continued in business. And many
brides have paid for their goods with a check and are out that money—asking
them to pay full retail or a surcharge is like a shop selling bags of
ice for $50 after a hurricane.
So, how’s that effort going? Well, we have good news and bad news.
First, the good: several bridal manufacturers have stepped up to the plate
and offered to release bride’s dresses at wholesale cost plus shipping.
We have detailed this in a list on our web page with contact phone
numbers and email:
http://www.windsorpeak.com/bridalbargains/dbs5.html
In some cases, manufactures are working with brides directly; other
cases, they are dealing with the DBS dealers.
Now the bad news: sadly, as with any tragedy, some folks have decided
to take advantage of brides in this time of crisis. We have noted on the
same page (linked above) the manufacturers that are either refusing to
release dresses or demanding a surcharge, sometimes hundreds of
dollars. Adding insult to injury, some bridal retailers have lobbied
manufacturers to NOT help brides directly . . . they would prefer brides be
forced to replace the order at full price in their retail shops. Some
retailers have posted to message boards that the brides “deserve” this
treatment for ordering from DBS in the first place. Of course, we have some
brides who are only days/weeks away from their weddings and time is of
the essence . . . and involving another middleman who wants their cut
adds insult to injury.
Here’s where we need help from brides (Knotties, we need you): please
review this list on our web page:
http://www.windsorpeak.com/bridalbargains/dbs5.html
We have noted in RED the bridal designers and manufacturers that are
refusing to help brides. Please: call them, email them and ask them to
help. Implore them to release these captive dresses to brides without any
surcharges. And keep this list in mind if you are dress shopping: note
there are some companies that care about brides and others that don’t.
(We are updating that web page frequently, so check back for the
latest).
5. Online resources: our message board, FAQ for brides and more.
We have a myriad of online resources to help brides with this crisis.
First, our main web page, from which you can read detailed FAQ’s.
http://www.windsorpeak.com/bridalbargains/dbs911.html
Second, we have our message boards:
http://www.windsorpeak.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=174&page=
We will continue to cover this situation, so watch our web page for the
latest news.

you can get one at any fabric store. just check the magazines and they will give you a number. Or you can ask the people in the store to help you find the one u liked and they can get the pattern out of the drawer for you.
caution: there are probably going to be about 15 books, so take your patience with you.

Has anyone finished making a veil? How did it turn out? I'm a few hundred over my budget, and I'm leaving bumper room for how many people show and honeymoon, so I was thinking about making my veils. I want 2, cause my dress looks good with a long veil, and I'm having a traditional wedding, and then to put on a shorter veil during the reception. I don't want to spend a few hundred to get them made. But I'm also scared to do it myself. When I cook, I burn, so who knows what can happen with this project. Is it easy to make?

The pattern I am using is a McCall's pattern in the envelope and that which a person purchases from a store. McCall's has a lot of different patterns for veils which are usually in the books at the stores in fabric departments.

I was thinking about that, I found some on ebay. I found a short one a want, but I have not been able to find the right long one I want. I'm scared to buy it, then hate it!
If you haven't picked your dress yet, see if any stores offer free headpieces with certain dresses. I know mine comes with a free tiara and veil of my choice, regardless of price. I was frantic at first, trying to find the "one." But they are letting me wait until I pick up the dress and am ready to wear it until I have to choose the "head gear." Hehe. I was trying on veils yesterday, and some of those are like $200! For a VEIL. The tiaras are even more if you buy one at the bridal stores. But maybe you can find a deal!

My sister in law is making my veil. I know they come out great because my SIL made hers when she married my brother and it was gorgeous....hers was actually like what Kikki said, she had the long one she wore to the ceremony with the shorter one and a blusher...she had a headband it was attached to with velcro and she could pull the velcro apart and take the longer piece out for the reception, which was very cool. she used a butterwick pattern for hers and we picked out a mccall's pattern for mine...take a look in my journal as there is a pic of the veil pattern on that.
