Like all brides and their mothers, we are having a disaggreement. My fiance and I want to eliminate having a cheesy DJ and program our Ipod for the music entertainment. With the availability of downloading any song from the internet, we will be able to have a wide variety of music. As for the announcements, a couple of our friends and family members said they would participate in announcing some of the events (i.e. our entrance, cake cutting, bouquet/garter toss, etc...) However, my mom thinks that if we eliminate the DJ, that it won't go smoothly. Can anyone comment on whether or not they have been to wedding that did not have a DJ or band? How did it work out? I have searched the internet and I have found some postivie feedback and some negative feedback, but all the negative feedback were from professional wedding DJ's that are loosing business.

I think its possible to do - if you have someone to make the announcements and someone to fiddle with the ipod that is well versed with it - if someone requests a song, or something happens to the ipod, you're kinda screwed - I would have a backup plan or ipod, that's for sure. Also, if you're downloading your music, I would make sure to do a test run with EVERY song to make sure they don't skip or the sound quality isn't poor. Even from paysites like itunes you can get some poor quality mp3's. Also, what about projecting the sound? Do you have high quality speakers that will fill your room?
When I went to my brother's wedding and reception they did not us a dj or band and everything turned out ok. I am going to make a cd for my wedding and reception that way when we are supposed to have some music someone can just hit play on the cd boom box. They then had someone announce the events and had a microphone set up for that very purpse.

I've been to a weding that only used a boom box for music. The family of the bride ( I am friends with the groom) didn't want any dancing or drinking. The only people that could even hear the music were the people sitting right next to it. So, I would make sure you had speakers or something that would amplify the music so everyone could hear it.

I understand the concern about a cheesy DJ, but if the right one is hired, it's not cheesy, it makes the party fun. I've always tried to steer brides away from the do it yourself DJ technique. It often creates confusing, the bridal party doesn't always want to make announcements, even though they agreed to it at the beginning. I've seen many times, where guests leave early because there is no one to get them out on the dance floor. Do you really want to pay all that money to have your guests leave before the party ever gets started?

What do you recommend for a reception where a DJ is not allowed? One location I am considering has a Piano Bar adjacent to the room my reception would be held in, so they prohibit the use of a DJ (so as to not comete with the piano). They say you can hear the piano in the room. I love to dance to club/hip-hop type music, and my fiance doesn't dance, and we are considering a close-family-only ceremony (translation: mostly grandparents/parents), so I don't know that anyone will actually want to dance. The resort rents the room for 3 hours, so by the time we have the hor-dourves (1 hr), sit down to eat (45 min-1 hr), we still have an hour or so for dessert/cake. I'm afraid it will be boring without music and dancing.

Many reception sites have great sound systems that allow you to add your own pre-made CD. If you are not using a wedding coordinator or a DJ then assign a particular person (not family) to make all the announcements and watch for the flow of the evening.

It's nice to have music, it really makes for a great atmosphere even if it isn't for dancing, just to relax. Is there someone there to play the paino at all times, or is it a self playing? If you really can here it well in the room, then I say leave it and enjoy that mood music. Otherwise, see if it's aloud to have a small system set up with dinner music for the remainder of your evening. Play classical piano, and more instrumental music. Nothing overt or loud like a DJ would produce.
