I was wondering if anyone knew where I can get help with seating charts without having to pay someone to do it or buy some software. I'm on a major budget and I just can't justify paying for seating arrangements.
Anyone have any ideas?

The simplest & easieat way to handle seating is to make sure you have a reserved table for the bridal party and another one for parents & grand parents. Then just let your guests choose where they want to sit.
If you do want to do seating charts, then you can create a floor plan using the drawing tools in Excel or just do it by hand. Publish the seating list in the program. Guests can identify their table number from the list. Have each table clearly numbered. To avoid preparing individual place cards, guests can sit anywhere at that table.

Liltiger 67... Did you already book your location? When I booked my place they gave me a floor plan with how many tables would be in each section and how many people could sit at each. It is making it really easy to do the seating arrangements.
I agree with mermaid. Make sure that the bridal party has a reserved table (usually in the front at the reception) and the parents and grandparents have a table. Most round tables at any reception site will hold 8 people so depending on how many people you will have at the parent/grandparent table will depend on how many tables will be reserved for that. Also, the wedding party will more than likely come with a guest so that they can dance while the dancing is going on and so their guests should also have a table set aside for them. The officiant and his/her guest will normally sit at the parent/grandparent table. I think that because a lot of the guests will want to mingle with others that they have not seen in a while or do not know, then it is pointless to make a seating chart with names on the tables.
Oh yeah, I have seen some mention of having a kids table with activities for children during the reception. I think this would be appropriate for any reception in which there are a lot of children. The kids can eat with their parents and then when the dancing, toasts, etc start then the kids can entertain themselves at the kids table. Some of the things that I would include at a kids table are coloring books and crayons, various games, etc. If your having your reception at a banquet hall you can ask them to include a smaller table for the kids table.

If you can afford $49.95, you can get the best seating stuff imaginable at www.mystylewedding.com. It handles your seating but also is the only planner that shows you the scene in every detail, photo realistic, full color, etc. You can put people in their seats, change their race, clothes, age, etc., to match your guests and even put in photos of real guests. A lite version is available with seating in 2D for $19.95. It'll save you much more than the price so its' great economy.
