I'm looking for an alternative to having bubbles blown or rice thrown when we are exiting the church. We are getting married in January 2006, so we are going with a winter theme, with lots of candles, reds and pinks, and an ice sculture. We'd need something that's not going to cause that big of a mess. Any ideas would be great!! Thanks!

My fiance's brother and his wife also had a winter wedding (in Feb.). They had little bells with a ribbon attached to it with there names and wedding date on them. I think that's not messy at all! I think that would work very well with your sort of theme! Hope it helps! -Amber-

If you want something to take the place of rice thrown at your wedding, try birdsead. From what I heard, the rice people throw at weddings are always consumed by birds, which, in turn kill them. I guess birds can't eat rice. But they can definatley eat birdsead!

I had a crazy idea to use chinese paper yoyos as a send off. The church said we couldn't use anything that would end up on the floor/ground, but I figured these could still lend some "action" to any pictures taken. I didn't do it becuase I had to make a mad dash from the church to get bridal party pics taken but I do know that Oriental Trading Co. online carries them 9see pic) for about 2.95 per dozen. I didn't see any in pink or red (red was my color too), but I would guess those colors may not be to find as I believe they have meaning in chinese culture. Like I said..it's sort of a crazy idea but who knows it could work? Good luck!

Hi Chris:
We recently went to an evening wedding, you didn't mention what time you were getting married so this might work, and when the bride and groom ***e out of the church we all light sparklers, it was the neatest thing. CHeck out website: www.weddingthings.com. Another thing that you can to is get a wodden rod dow and glue ribbons that match your color. You guest and wave them around as you and FH ***es out of the church.
But whatever you choose to do, do not do silly string or confetti. Silly string is highly flamable and confetti can stick to your dress and case spots.
Best of luck and congratulations on your coming wedding.
Mary :)

I am considering having helium balloons with our first names and wedding date on a tag...then when we exit having the guest let them go...there's no mess @ all to clean!

Use them in your choice of colors to enhance your scheme :)

My Fh And I Are Getting Married In December 2005 And We Are Planning On Having Rose Petakls And Bird Seed Thrown As We Leave. Not Only Will The Phoitos Look Magnificient As The Petals Are Floating Down But The Birds Will Be Happy As Well.As far as the mess goes all will land on the groun outside and it is all natural so cleanuop is not necessary.

I think the rose petals are a beautiful idea - and the birdseed as well - with my first wedding, it was out at a church right on the water near the lighthouse and there was a bit of a seagull problem so we couldn't throw birdseed or we'd be attacked by the seagulls - apparently there was a problem with a wedding before with it. I just couldn't imagine! I'm glad they warned me :) Although, I see you're in Oklahoma so its not as much of a problem hehe :)

Chris,
My girlfriend rented a snow making machine. even though it was winter the day that she got married it wasn't snowing and she has always wanted it to snow on her wedding day. when the pics ***e back they looked soooo awsome. it was as if it was really snowing. i am not sure where you live and how cold it would be but my cousin used butterflies. her wedding of course was in the fall. hope these ideas help.

What about snowflake shaped confetti? It will require some clean up though.

I think the helium ballons would look pretty, but there are environmental concerns with that. Where I live, we are on the ocean and surrounded by rivers and creeks. When the balloons deflate, marine wildlife can accidently consume the balloon and suffocate. I don't want to ruin your idea, it just depends on the environment in your area.

My cousin got married yesterday and instead of rice or bubbles they used little snowflakes...the little confetti ones that are used on tables for decoration at parties. It was really cute and they got stuck in the bride's hair as she walked, which had a neat effect.
Ok just several pieces of advice about some of the posts on here:
1.) Helium balloons being let off might be against your local laws so you might want to check that out first. Some states, cities, etc do not want the litter of the balloons once they land and so they have decided to write laws and make fines for people breaking the law.
2.) Some states, such as Arizona, outlaws sparklers. Again check with your local law enforcement to see if there are any laws prohibiting the use of sparklers.
3.) The rose petal idea is lovely and one that I would probably use and if the place you are renting throws a fit about then you can always get the clean up commity to clean those up.
4.) Birdseed is absolutely ok to throw and don't worry about the mess that it makes because the birds will clean it up.
5.) An alternative to using rice could include the new rice that is out now that is for throwing at weddings. It is safe for birds to eat.
6.) The snow machine is wonderful for a winter wedding.

A recently found an idea that I absolutely loved and am planning on having at my wedding: English lavender buds (which are about the size of rice). I think the ad on the website I saw it on called it "lavender rice" but I can't remember where I saw it now. Anyway, it's the buds from the lavender flowers which smells wonderful and it's environmentally-safe. All flowers have meanings behind them and lavender means love and devotion which is perfect for weddings!! You probably only need about 1 oz for each guest and can either tie them up in little tulle rounds or in paper cones or small glassine envelopes, whatever you decide looks best.

A lot of venues do not allow confetti because of the clean up... I would make sure I checked my contract to make sure it was okay or contacted the venue before planning on having confetti.

Yes I contacted the church we will be having our wedding at and they don't allow rice or birdseed, because it's a clean up issue. I am considering a butterfly or dove release. Anyone have any info on this? I saw in the back of a bridal magazine a vendor that will mail you the butterflies right before the wedding ( I forget the name) I worry thought that they won't survive the delivery. If anyone has done this please let me know as these are the few choices I have. I have heard that bubbles although beautiful may stain or get in your eyes. Those chinese poppers I would worry would poke someone ( like say ME) in the eye. Well, just rattling my concerns. Thanks :)

Doves worry me because of Bird Poop!!! I have to be honest!
Bubbles could stain, but you can test them, just get out old white t-shirts and see if they stain, if they do, then move on to the next type, if they don't then purchase!

I have never seen a butterfly release done, I am sure it wouls be beautiful. I have seen similar ads for it in magazines. We thought about doing it too, but when I went to the website, I saw that they are packaged in these tiny little boxes that keep them still. Maybe this sounds silly, but I thought it seemed a little cruel. I am not saying you shouldn't do it, but I would probably end up releasing them as soon as the box arrived. We are using sparklers.
