Hi...I dunno if this is the correct place for this, if it's not, feel free to move it.

I got engaged to the light of my life, Alex, in March. We set a date for May 19th, 2008. In April, I picked out a dress, a beautiful icy white organza over satin dress, with pink and silver beading, strapless, with rouching. I was (am) in love with this dress.

Unfortuantly, not long after picking it out and deciding on colors for the bridesmaids, I lost my job, and was unable to continue payments on my dress. The place I was getting it from was extremely helpful, and understanding, and said that if I wanted, I could take the balance I'd already paid, 150$, and pick out a dress of equal or lesser value. There weren't any bridal gowns for that price, so I picked out a really nice floor length formal / coctail dress. The only altering it needs is the hem, it will just barely drag the floor in 2-3 inch heels. The only problem with it, is that it's black. The cream / ivory-ish type color made me look like a banana with my blonde hair.

Me and my fiance still want to have a wedding though, but there is no way we could take on extra payments. If we decide to go through with this, the flowers and other things wouldn't really be much of an issue, his mother is helping us pay for that. It was my mother's job to help pay for my dress, and she skipped out on her duty. (Like normal, but that's a whole other book :p ) I've been thinking about having a black / hot pink themed wedding. I know, if nothing else, I could pull it off because I almost exclusively wear black and pink. I would wear my black formal gown, hair in a low updo, with a black veil attached to it, maybe with hot pink piping on the veil, and have the bridesmaids in black dresses with hot pink sashes, and the guys in black tuxes with hot pink vests, and boquetes with hot pink roses and black ribbon.

My only concern is that, in rual Alabama, where we live, that might be too outrageous. I'm trying to make lemonaid outta this bunch of lemons this wedding has become, and I was wondering what the opinions of you ladies here were. Has anyone seen anything like this done, or could you hunt down some pictures? I've googled it, but can't find anything decent. Or, if you have another option for a dress, because that's all I'm really lacking, I have a 150-175 dollar budget for a dress, could possibly swing 200 for a fantastic dress.

Any thoughts or advice would be apreciated.

You could look at prom dresses. Some look very similar to wedding dresses, and A LOT cheaper! If you are very attached to the idea of a black wedding dress and you can tie into the rest of the wedding, then you should go for it! I would only keep in mind, will you look back in like ten years and regret having done it? You might feel more traditional in white, or an off white color. I've never heard of anything like this, but there is always a first time for everything! :) Since your wedding is pretty far off, would you be able to save some more money for another dress? Depending on how laid back your ceremony is, you can look in department stores for other cocktail dresses. In the end whatever your most comfortable with is the deciding factor, no matter where you live! Best of luck!

could you have the store order the same (the black one) gown in white or ivory? you could look for a bridesmaid's gown as stated in the previous post, or what about looking on ebay for a traditional gown. you can but the gown anywhere from $1-25 and then pay around $125 for shipping. beautiful gowns custom made to your measurements that do not have to be altered.

I know people order dresses online for good prices. I don't know if you can do that though.

I've never seen a black wedding dress. If you live in a rural, more traditional area it probably won't go over very well. Have you tried the mall? I didn't want a big poufy dress or to pay a lot of money since it was just the 2 of us so I got my dress from Dillard's and it looks just like a wedding dress and was gorgeous. And as previously mentioned, a lot of prom dresses look like wedding dresses too.
