I am trying to work out my budget and i'm wondering if Silk flowers are less expensive than real flowers. I thought I'd remembered hearing that silk flowers were less expensive but when I mentioned it to my sister, she said that they would be much more expensive.

Any advice??

THey are not less expensive, generally around the same price, sometimes a little more than fresh flowers. The reason that most people go with silk if they are trying to save money is that they can do it themselves, and they don't have to throw them away.
My suggestion to brides that want to save money on flowers, but do it themselves is this:
If you would like to have centerpeices, have a nice potted plant or an arrangement in potted plant that will last. Use lillies or another perennial so they last, and keep coming up year after year. You could get away with 10-15 a table, very inexpensive and beautiful.
Check out http://www.onlinewholesaleflowers.com - you can get fresh cut flowers really really cheap, and even make your own bridesmaids bouquets and boutonnieres ofr a fraction of the cost.
I would suggest however that you go to a florist for your bouquet, there should be no messing around when it comes to the bride.

I happen to be going with silk flowers. I'm not really sure which flowers are actually cheaper but silk ones are definately lighter! I was in a wedding last June and we had real flowers....they get so heavy after a while. I stood there thinking...hmm her bouquet is heavier than mine even, wonder if she's wishing this would get over so she can put them down. LOL horrible I know, but true. Just a little thought.

I don't know if you have a career tech center in your area, but there sometimes are flower shops there - I know we have one here and the floral shop did the flowers for my sister's wedding, the cosmetology class did everyone's hair, and the culinary shop did the food. It was quite economical and absolutely wonderful - these people - actually almost all high school students get graded on their performance AND there are professional instructors there to make sure everything is proper. Might be worth checking out -

I am using silk flowers.. You can go somewhere like Michaels or JOanne Fabrics and get flowers. They would be much less money. :D

I am using silk flowers for several reason and one of them is because they are less expensive. If you stop and look at all the cost of real flowers it adds up really fast. For instance, you can buy the silk flowers and make all of the arrangements yourself and not have to worry about the cost of having a florist make the arrangements and deliver them to the wedding and reception site. Plus the arrangements will be made how you want them. Another cost that you have to add in to your budget when having real flowers is the preservation of your bridal bouquet. With silk flowers you do not have that cost added on to your budget.

I've found silk to be cheaper - I found exactly what I wanted at www.thebridesbouquet.com - premade bouquets that are just gorgeous.
None of the work and a fraction of the price - and they last forever :)

If anyone is considering real flowers, check out Sams Club. They have huge savings on flowers! I think we will end up ordering flowers from there to make our own bouquets.

There really isn't much of a price difference between the flowers, however, you can save more if you use silk flowers. How? You can purchase silk flowers in advance, especially when they go on sale. One thing I've noticed about Michaels is that although they do carry silk flowers, sometimes the flowers are not as nice. My suggestion is to check around your area for a silk floral wholesale provider that sells to the public. They will carry a wide variety of silk flowers in many different shades and styles. Hopes this helps.

Believe it or not I found some gorgeous red rose bushes at Wal-Mart for $3. There are 8 huge blooms on each bush. If I would've purchased 8 large open fresh roses, they would've been at least $3 each. I ended up doing my whole bouquet for around $15. A fresh boquet would have easily been $45. Silk can be cheaper if you don't buy single stem flowers. Find a bush of the right color with and maybe put a few more expensive "attention grabber" flowers in your arrangement and fill in with cheaper bush.

Depends on the flower. In my case, silks are going to be much, much less expensive. I chose to use calla lilies in one of the shades of orange, and every florist I've asked has quoted me around $200 for a dozen!!! But, I found some fabulous silks that look and feel real and are the perfect shade of orange for $4.00 each.

My mom and I have also purchased a few bulbs, which aren't terribly expensive and we are using them as testers to see how well they grow and how long they take. We figure that if they do well (so far, so good), I might cut some of our homegrown for my bouquet & maybe boutineers. I'm only going to carry a couple, so it's not a big deal. Otherwise, I'll carry a couple of the silks.

Our wedding theme is winter and our colors are midnight blue, ice blue and silver. We live in a remote area in the north and our wedding is in November 2000 miles away.
I wanted blue and white roses.he cost was way too much. So we chose silks. We found silk roses in shades of blue, white roses, as well as silver holly for accent. The roses all had little dew drops (plastic) on each of the petals to look like frozen dew drops which I felt added to my theme of winter (ice). So with ribbon, lace and my glue gun I created my bouquet (as seen in the photo), my Matron of honor's bouquet, the throw away boquet and all the boutonieres for under $25 Canadian.

Beautiful job! I love silk flowers - they don't make me sneeze, they don't die and you can find some real quality ones! I was at Walmart the other day and I literally had to touch some calla lilies because they looked so real!
