My daughter is getting married in 3 months and my wife and I are really concerned about how much to pay for the wedding gown. We've checked most reliable sources, but we'd like to hear what the people on this forum say.
The best source I've come across so far is Martha Stewart's gown advice (linked here: http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=2e89c137bf22f010VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCR D&vgnextchannel=a71a7dbc53cee010VgnVCM1000003d370a0a RCRD&rsc=navigation_weddings_brides-attire&lastnavigatedchannel=abc97dbc53cee010VgnVCM1000003 d370a0aRCRD). If there's anything wrong with following that, let me know.
Thanks!

Most wedding gowns are between 500-1500 dollars. If you want something more couture or custom then you are looking at 3,000-20,000.
I bought mine from a bridal shop that was trying to get rid of samples. I paid 40 dollars and my mom is re making the gown into one that is very similar to a custom style I wanted...About $175 total.

My dress was $700. It was alot cheaper than others I was looking at. What about a white prom dress? You could always add more pearls or sequence yourself.
David's Bridal has really good sales. Just keep an eye out for sales.

I got mine at David's Bridal - they are actually having a sale right now that goes through the 23rd. Mine was like $549 But just so you know - I ordered mine and it wont be in until 10/10 - maybe you can rush it or something though if you need to - I have a year to go so there is not rush

I went to Alfred Angelo and only managed to spend $249.99 on my dress. It is not necessary to spend hundreds and hundreds or even thousands on a dress. Help her find one that is less expensie and then help out a little with the honeymoon or some other aspect of the wedding.

The concern is that there is 3 months left most Bridal shops don't carry a full lines dresses in every size so they need to order it and there is almost always alterations required which also take time.
Maybe look up bridal shops in your area on www.superpages.com and call them beforehand to see if any are having sales or have a surplus of gowns in your daughters size.
You could also try stores like JC Penny, Macy's and the like as well. Here our JC Penny's store is closing from one location and then re-opening in a brand new store added on in the same mall. This might be the case in other areas as well and everything is like 70% or more off because they aren't transfering the stock.

I got my dress from Eva's Bridal and it cost $1200 after the discount. I would agree that three months before is not a lot of time to look for a dress. My dress took 6 months to come in and that is standard for many "not off the rack" dress shops. You are going to be forced to by a dress from a sample sale or from a place like David's bridal that has dresses readily available for purchase. Just remember- the more elegant as in more beading, more material and the type of material, the more expensive the dress. I would say normal prices go from $200 -1500, but depending on designer and style and materials. I have had a few members of my family get dresses at David's $99.00 sale. Target now also carries wedding dresses in the $250-$500 range.

Also depending on what size your daughter is, you may have more or less luck in finding something in the store. Meaning, if she is plus size, more than likely they will have to order it in her size, b/c most places dont have a lot of plus sized dresses in store. Unless you go somewhere like David's Bridal, they have some, and Alfred Angelos has a bunch....but you may still have to order. And yes you can put a rush on it, but of course you have to pay more.
On the other hand, if she is an "average" size or small size, then she may have better luck in finding something in the store she can buy "off the rack". And you will have to get immediately to an alterations place also.
To answer the question....my original dress was $800, I got it during a sale at Alfred Angelos and it was $200 off, so I paid $600.

I went to David's Bridal 3 months before my wedding & was able to find a dress off the rack. Right now would be the perfect time to go to a David's Bridal also b/c all of their dresses are on sale.

My mom set a budget for my dress of $1,000.00; however, I don't know how much it will cost yet, but that seems reasonable.

Or have her measured & look on ebay. Even Kanacca.com I hear is great. I spent $250 for my dress on ebay, then had to pay $40 for alterations (hemming & a bustle). Good luck!

I spent $650 on my dress. I haven't had it altered yet, but I expect to spend about $150 on that.
I have to agree that 3 months is cutting it very close. Going to David's Bridal is probably going to be your best bet. Like everyone said, they are having a sale right now, so you can find something and buy it right off the rack instead of having to order it.
Depending on how formal she want's to go, I like the suggestion of the white prom dress. But if she wants something flashy, then that might not be what you're looking for.

I found my dress off the rack, and it's gorgeous...you can find one short notice, you just need to take the time to look around and find something in your size. Mine was only $275, and it looks like it cost much more...best of luck in your search!

I live in a small town area and went to a local boutique and got my gown for $676. It is a Mary's Bridal dress. Love it. They told me it would take 6 to 8 week to come in and it was here in less then 6. The best part is that I bought my gown in August and they were running a promotion that if you bought your gown that month you got you veil or headpiece for free. They also have an on going promotion that if you but your gown, shoes and veil from them you get 20% off your total order. So in the long run I got my gown, veil and shoes for a grand total of $586. I figued what I save will go fo my alterations!

I just bought my dress on ebay NWT (New With Tags) for 34.99 with shipping under $15. I love the dress and am psyched! I figure buying it a size larger and then paying to have it altered will still keep it under $200.
