We are going on a cruise for our honeymoon. I have been on some, but my fiancee has never been on one. He is afraid that he will get motion sickness.
Does anybody know of a way you can figure out if you may possibly get motion sickness on a ship? I haven't known him to get sick in cars, roller coasters, or anything else.
I am also interested in knowing what types of medicines, patches, etc. are good for helping motion sickness (and don't make you drowsy).

Dramamine makes a non drowsy formula...and yes you def want the non drowsy!!! My friend made that mistake on a cruise and then had a drink...needless to say she was way messed up!! LOL....I have not ever had to use it, but I believe it is a patch you put behind your ear. Maybe he could ask his doctor.
If he doesn't get sick in cars or roller coasters then he probably won't have a problem, but one thing I know a lot of people use on cruises is a wristband that uses pressure points (one brand is called Travel Eze) or one for behind your ear that you can buy OTC. I've heard ginger works well for nausea also (you can buy ginger candy in a health food store) and there are prescription patches and pills that you can get from your doctor. Hope that helps.

If you live near a ferry ride you can take one afternoon for a few dollars you may want to try that to get an idea if it bothers him they typically last less than an hour and are really enjoyable ways to see things. I grew up in Burlington,VT but my family was here in NY so we traveled back frequently and the fastest and most popular way to do that across Lake Champlain is by ferry (never found Champ...lol).
I'd go to your Pharmacy and if not sure what to buy ask the pharmacist for help they are there to help. If the don't help and he has a problem on the ship you can always consult the Doctor on Board for his advise.

i just made and appointment with the doctor, because we are going on a cruise too and I get car sick. I get really dizzy, but I never accutally throw up. It's weird, but I dont' want to chance it on the boat.
I've heard of people who ride amusment park rides, fly and can turn around on a full stomach 25 times get sea sick. So I guess it just depends on you. My FH and I are both going to wear the patch.
If the don't help and he has a problem on the ship you can always consult the Doctor on Board for his advise.
If you can, try and find out before the cruise because the 2 that I've been on,the ship's doctor is only available for very few hours a day and it costs a lot of money to see him. Talk to your family doctor if you are not sure.

I went on my first cruise Nov. 2006. Before I left I got sea sickness patches from my doctor (a small patch that goes behind your ear). I was fine on the ship and actually only wore mine one day. The one woman I went with always gets sick so she wore one the entire time and never once got sick even though it was a VERY rough trip. My fiance and I just booked our cruise today and he has never flown or been on a cruise so I am definately getting some for him.
