I'm wondering if anyone has any creative suggestions for alternatives to cake at the reception. I'm not a big fan of cake and would love to find something else to substitute. Any ideas?

Cookies or brownies rice krispie treats and s’mores . You could also use a variety of different sweet treats, from chocolate chip cookies, to cream puffs, to Russian tea cakes. A large display of these, on tiers in a shape similar to a wedding cake. A good baker could do it!

You can serve any dessert you want.
While cake is traditional, it is not required.
Many couples who marry at Walt Disney World have a dessert reception that includes many desserts other than cake. You can visit their site to get ideas.
I attended a wedding once where we served chocolate mousse for dessert, and then later in the evening cake was served. Yummy - 2 desserts!

A lot of people are using Cheescake. I have seen these decorated and some of them are better than regular cake.

I wish I had used a cheesecake at my wedding. That's my favorite desert, but we went with a beautiful marble two tier wedding cake that was sickening. The frosting was about an inch deep. It was beautiful to look at, painful to eat. You can do an ice cream buffet. Or hot brownies with ice cream on top. You can do fresh fruit with a cream cheese dip. Or you can make a trifle with fruit or lady fingers.

I have been to many weddings where there is a sweets table. The table usually includes eclairs, chocolate covered strawberries, truffles, mini tarts etc.

I was at a family wedding recently where they replaced the cake with a chocolate fountain. You can rent one and it's basicallyjust like a punch fountain, but with... yes... CHOCOLATE. The company usually supplies the foods to dip as well, such as: strawberries and fruit, graham crackers, etc. Everyone loved it and it was a huge it!

This is a somewhat old thread, so I don't know if the person you are sharing this with will get the info. But since you brought up the chocolate fountain, I thought I would throw in my 2 cents in case another bride is considering it.
I had my heart set on a chocolate fountain. I LOVE chocolate and I thought it would be so fun. Then I saw one at a bridal show. It looked gorgeous and they had all the yummies to dip in the chocolate. But I completely lost interest. It was delicious, but the novelty of it wore off pretty fast. I am not saying it isn't a great idea and an excellent alternative for a wedding cake. I just think that if anyone is thinking about it, they need to try one first.

strawberries... pile em high or lay them out on a tiered serving tray like they do for cupcakes.
...and maybe add some chocolate or whipped cream.
