View Full Version : Meshing Colours and Themes

I've made a couple threads about enorporating the mermaid stuff into my themes, but I haven't really gotten any feedback on my major themses and stuff.
The colours I want are blues, seafoam green, silver, and deep red.
The themes I would really like to mesh are ocean and Celtic and maybe some rose accents thrown around.
I'd really appreciate some help on how to mesh it all well and make it work. If it helps at all, the venue I have in mind is a dinner cruise yacht in San Diego. I'm not entirely sure how much creative control I get because they're mostly all-inclusive(like the ceremony, reception, catering). I want to be prepared, but I don't want to get my heart set on something I'll end up having no control over.
Thanks!

One way is to use tulle of different colors. I don't know what kind of decorations you have planned, but you could decorate the chairs or something in the different colors of tulle.

What if your major theme was the sea and you just incorporated some celtic things into it? I know there are LOTS of celtic myths about the sea, such as many sea dragons (not sure you would want dragons at your wedding, but hey), and Celtic selkies would fit into your mermaid theme. The legends say that during the day they are sea-living seals and during the night they turn into humans to frolic on sandy beaches. The Celts also have a myth similar to the Lost City of Atlantis. They also believed in ocean fairies, so you could do something with that if you wanted.
Now for your colors: you have a lot of colors that you want to incorporate and while that shouldn't be a problem, you should probably think about making sure you don't overdo it. I'm not trying to offend you here. If this was me, I would probably keep the sea colors as the main decorations, maybe make some multi-colored sea blues and greens panels out of tulle that I could hang on the wall. Tulle always softens things. I would probably decorate the tables with sea colors of tulle, too. Then to incorporate the Celtic and rose touches, I make those the red touches, like have glass bowls as centerpieces and put glass sea-colored stones in there with a few red stones mixed in and then some red roses. Or I might use Irish lace tablecloths (although that can get expensive very quickly) You can incorporate Celtic knotwork into anything. I've seen people stencil Irish knotwork onto a piece of fabric with paint and make a tablerunner for their reception tables like this:

I know our Michael's craft store has 3-inch ribbon that has Celtic knotwork on it, that would be something you could use almost anywhere. I know they have white and red for sure because I bought them, but I also think they have green, gold, and navy.
Or, if you just want Celtic overtones to your wedding without any decorations that reflect that, you can always do other things. My husband and I mixed Irish wedding vows in with our traditional marriage one because the Irish say wonderful things in their wedding ceremonies. You could also wear Celtic jewelry or some kind of tartan sash. I'm not sure if you've gotten your dress yet, but you could get some kind of Celtic wedding dress like the ones here:

or here: http://www.lindsayfleming.com/all%20gowns.htm
You could incorporate handfasting into the ceremony. You could have a celtic band play for the reception (or a celtic CD if you're not having live music).
You should probably first find out what the yacht will let you do. That way you can work within your restrictions.
Sorry, I feel like I went a little overboard, but I find Celtic weddings very exciting! Of course, that may have something to do with 75% of the blood running through my veins being straight from the Green Isle!

Thank you so so so much, melatsch.
I had thought I would use the blues and seagreen as my main theme colours with silver accents and the red was only becuase I adore red roses and I absolutely have to have them.
I never even thought of useing faeires, dragons and selkies. That would be perfect!
The vows are set by the cruise-ships but the site says you can alter them a little, so I was going to see if I can add a little handfasting into it. What other Celtic vows were you thinkng of? I tried to do a net search for handfasting, but I just got a bunch of Wiccan ceremonies with like High Preist and High Preistess and all sorts of odd things.
And about the wedding dress, I'm desgining my own. Those links give great inspiration.

Glad I could help.
Here are different versions of Irish wedding vows:
http://www.weddingclipart.com/guide/wedding-vows/irish-wedding-vows.html (http://www.weddingclipart.com/guide/wedding-vows/irish-wedding-vows.html)(This link also has a blessing you could maybe have someone say to you at your reception)
Here are the vows that my husband and I used parts of:
"You cannon possess me for I belong to myself
But while we both wish it, I give you that which is mine to give
You cannon command me, for I am a free person
But I shall serve you in those ways you require and the honeycomb will taste sweeter coming from my hand
I pledge to you that yours will be the name I cry aloud in the night and the eyes into which I smile in the morning
I pledge to you the first bite of my meat and the first drink from my cup
I pledge to you my living and my dying, each equally in your care
I shall be a shield for your back and you for mine
I shall not slander you, nor you me
I shall honor you above all others, and when we quarrel we shall do so in private and tell no strangers our grievances
This is my wedding vow to you. This is the marriage of equals."
This is also a site I ran across during my planning that had a lot of cool Irish traditions you may want to incorporate:
