My FH and I have decided to hire a juke box for our reception as it allows us to choose the 60 odd CDs in the machine and we have the option to programme it to play randomly throughout the day until speeches and our band start later in the evening. It also means that while the Band are having a break people can chose their own songs to dance to.

We have kind of decided on Al Green lets stay together - its slow enough to waltz to without being too cheesy. Does anyone have any other suggestions for an uplifting first dance?

What are other people doing for music at their receptions?

I think the jukebox sounds like a cute idea! I'm trying to convince Daryl to learn the tango, but it's not gonna fly! We're looking at some old Etta James, Frank Sinatra, etc. Since our group is 10 people, we're just making CD's of guitar music for the ceremony and all big band and swing jazz for the dinner.

Our first song is probably going to be kiss me by sixpence none the richer. It is our song. I don't remember why we chose this as our sing. I think it was because of one of his brothers saying it should be since we were always kissing, but that's not for sure.

My FH chose our song ... "Wonderful tonight" by Eric Clapton.

hehe we just chose our song last night... its actually the only song we have planned for sure yet. Me and my FH both love the movie Moulin Rouge, and we absolutely adore the song "Come What May" from the soundtrack, and the lyrics are amazing! So last night I was bugging him about what song should be our first dance and when i suggested that one he said "That would be great" and then he mutters "back to the drawing board". I had to drag what that meant out of him and it turns out that about a month ago he had downloaded the sheet music and had been practising so hta he could play it on his guitar and sing it for me at the reception! I thought that was really sweet and felt sort of bad for ruining the surprise and all, but it turns out that he can't sing the part anyways so he would rather it be our first dance :D.
(lol part of the reason that we were having so much trouble is because "Our song" isn't really an appropriate first dance song... our song is "You've lost thatn lovin feeling" from the Top Gun soundtrack, because he did the whole Tom cruise thing and sang it to me on one knee a week after we met. But I think people would be awfully confused if we made that our first dance lol) wow I ramble a lot!

We don't officially have a song, and haven't talked about first dances, yet- but I think this one will be a frontrunner for us. FH sang it to me one night when we were dating- I'll never forget. ;)

aww everyones songs are going to be so lovely!! Nick and I have two songs that we want, we just have to narrow it down. They are both in my journal but we are doing country songs.
Brad Paisley - Everything to me
Little Big town- Bring it on home to me..
Both very sweet lyrics. Nick says the Brad paisley song reminds him of me and he really wnats that one, so I am flattered and will probably use that one. hahaha

Ok so hopefully some of you have The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler right? Well the song at the end I Wanna Grow Old with You is our song. It is so sweet yet funny and we just love it and when Andrew proposed he had that song playing in the back ground. I thought about doing something more classic to keep in style of the whole wedding but I just don't know. This song means so much to us. The other song we would dance to is Rod Stewarts Have I Told You Lately that I love You.

We don't even have an "our song" song lol
We joked about JoJo's "Get out" when we first started dating cuz it was on when I said "We need a song." haha.
Growing up I always wanted "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers... not sure anymore - but I'll probablt have it played.
I really like "As the World Falls Down" by David Bowie in Laybrinth (I'm a HUGE David Bowie fan!). He doesn't really want it as our first dance though, but he compromised and is willing to have it played - here are the lyrics:
http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/david+bowie/as+the+world+falls+down_20036970.html

Also, we might need to find something to "ballroom" dance to. We were talking about taking lessons.

Maybe he'll change his mind and choose the song I like ;)

We talked about taking lessons as well....well really I need to take them, he already knows how to do some ballroom dances. I think that would so romantic, but Im affraid I will step all over my dress or be too nervous and mess up hahaha....

I think we changed our song. I think we are going to use Soul Decision- Let's Do it Right. I think we should get some lessons of some sort. Neither Robert or I are very talented dancers. It would also be fun.

I love Al green! I think we might use our ipods, a friend suggested it to me. you can put it in the order that you want it or you can put it on scann. I thought it was great!! Oh just a wonderful song that I just heard a couple of weeks ago was by Smokey Robinson and it was " I Love Your Face" just another song idea to play during sometime I think that will be our first dance song.

Cody and I will be dancing our first song to:
Keith Urban: Making Memories of Us
That was the song my mom wanted him to have playing in the background when he proposed to me, but instead we are going to suprise her and have it as our first dance!

I think we might have "Sweet Thing" by Van Morrison or " The Drunk Song" By Rob Dougan. My FH always tries to sing them to me. He actually wants to sing them at our wedding. Which is a little scary to me.

We have decided to have Blake Shelton's Austin for our First Dance. We are having a Country Western Wedding so a country song is only approiate. The song shows how even know the couple is no longer together they have not moved on. His answering machine continues to say PS if this is Austin I still love you. Greg and I have been together for nearly 8 years but have separated a few times. We are from two separate states and I have moved back to my home state a few times. So this song kind of speaks to us.

I really like the song I do (Cherish you) by Mark Wills. 98 degrees did a version of it, but I like country.

I want to take dance lessons so we can actually "dance" to our first song instead of just standing there swaying back and forth. I already know how to dance, I have been dancing since I was three, and I have taken ballroom and salsa lessons. But my FH is not so light on his feet (I'm sure other women can sympathize with me on that one).

How many others are taking dance lessons? I think it's a good idea and looks better than just standing there.

we talked about doing this....I wonder if I get a discount since I am using a dance studio for the reception. LOL. But we are the other way around...FH knows how to already, but I don't...well not ballroom anyways.

My FH picked our song as well...we'll dance to "She's Everything" by Brad Paisley. The lyrics almost describe me to a T...and since the only song that we've ever considered "our song" is "She thinks my tractor's sexy" - he thought "She's Everything" would be more appropriate.

AWWWWW! That IS sweet! :D

We'll probably be dancing to "Fields of Gold" by Sting. My FH & I went to a dance together in the 10th grade, and that is one of the songs we danced to waaaaay back then. :p

I'm a little worried about the first dance, since neither of us is much of a dancer. Yikes! Any suggestions of how I might go about finding a few cheap lessons? I'm sure he will not be too excited about dance lessons, but I'm going to feel really nervous out on the dance floor at my wedding if I have no idea what I'm doing. :)

FH and I met online and exchanged a few songs with each other before we met, ya know getting to know likes and dislikes. One of the very first songs he sent me was the song we're now getting married to, well the first dance that is. It's a celtic band I had never heard of before I met him. Wasn't even into celtic music much, but he's Scottish...me, alittle Irish, me thinks. Anyway, it's a group called Glenngharry Bhoys, the song is "Deep Inside"...absolutely beautiful. You can listen to it here: http://www.glengarrybhoys.com/ Just look for the title and you'll hear a snippet of it. If you can find the whole song online to listen to, I recommend it, if you like this kind of music. It's quite contemporary! Happy Wedding to all!

FH is a crazy Prince fan. He told me the other day that our first dance song "has been chosen and is not up for debate". LOL I knew he wanted a prince song and trust him to pick a nice one... I have an inkling that it will be "Call my Name" from the Musicology CD, but we'll see. :)

We're not having a traditional reception since it's a destination beach wedding - just going out to a nice dinner afterwards - so I don't know if there will be a dance. However, we're having a big cookout back here and I'm sure at some point we'll do a "first dance" either in St. John or back in Massachusetts.

Our "first dance" song will be "In My Life" by The Beatles. I've always been a huge Beatles fan. Also, I've always felt that if I didn't agree with what this song's lyrics are saying, then I shouldn't be getting married. Basically, it's about the fact that we've both had a past and we don't deny that we have loved before, but that "I love you more." Not to mention, it's a pretty song and easy enough to "sway" to, since we're not good at structured dancing.

Here's a link to the lyrics in case you're interested:

Thanks! I still get mushy and teary-eyed when I listen to that song. To think about meeting someone online and finding the love of my life....just was mind-blowing! I never would have thunk it!!! :o) Then to have him be so "sappy" himself to send me a song like that!?! He is so wonderful!
If you don't mind me asking, how was the whole experience for you while online dating? We met through yahoo personals. I dated ALOT of jerks, but it was worth it to find the diamond in the rough, ya know! One of them even stalked me for year! He never got crazy about it, but called me constantly and nearly begging me to go back out with him. It really opened my eyes to alot though. I encourage women that are still "looking" to try it. But be more cautious than I was. I never really had any horrible experiences and even made a few cool new friends, but I think it might get old after awhile.
There's always that cliche' that says "when you least expect it, that's when you'll meet the one"....I do believe that!
FH and I, although we were "looking", it wasn't serious looking. He continued dating others and so did I. We both were coming off a bad relationship. But after 5 months of that we looked at each other and said, "why are we doing this? we enjoy each other so much, why don't we try something more"...and NOW WE'RE GETTING MARRIED!!!" Can you tell, I'm so happy about it!!!
Ok, maybe I'll post "my story" under my journal, haven't gone there yet. :O)

Have a nice day.

Have you tried checking with Colleges? One of the Colleges near me has a ballroom dance team, and some of the students offer lessons on the side. That is who will be teaching my FH and I.

I want our first dance song to be "I'm in Heaven" and I want to have a big dance production like Fred Estair (or however you spell it) and his partner. I know it's chessy. But I used to be a dancer, and I really want it to be a big production. Plus I like what the song relates too, because a dance is an agreement of two people, stepping together in motion. It's a give and take relationship, as one steps back the other one steps forward. Just in like a real relationship, you have to step together in motion to get where you want to in life. It's a perfect relationship just like it would be in heaven.
