View Full Version : Ocean but not "beachy" themes

I'm getting married in May of '08 and I wanted a personalized theme combination of formal tradition, ocean and spring themes with some of Disney's Little Mermaid mixed in. The colours I wanted to use were seafoam green, white/silver, pale blue and deep red. I was wondering if anyone had any tips, advice or ideas as to finding things that are ocean themed but not the informal beach wedding type things. As well on how to incorporate Little Mermaid without it looking childish or tacky.

Have you tried looking at Disney websites for wedding info to see if they have any ideas? Maybe they sell a LM wedding package that would help you get inspired.
I guess getting the McDonalds little mermaid tiara from a happy meal is out!!..someone had posted a site that in the Jewelry section under accessories that has beautiful beach jewelry; I also saw silver-plated seashells as placecard holders on eBay under placecard holders. There are websites for destination weddings that have a lot of great things, like seashells and dry starfish, etc. Check out www.theknot.com too, there seems to be a lot there.
Hope that helped a little!

Hey,
My FH and I found Ariel and Eric when she's in her human form, formal ball gown dancing on some Disney collecting site, they wanted $295 for it though. You could search Ebay and try to find something much cheaper. I think that www.conchking.com site has a lot of "ideas" for making it oceany/beachy with shells serving as oil candles, and flower holders. That www.bluerosebridalboutique.com site has tiaras and necklaces and earrings, and can do custom orders in any color you want. They're pretty reasonable rates considered it's swarvoski crystal and shells, etc. For our Hawaiian wedding FH and I are using Lilo and Stitch cake topper decorations. It won't look childish/tacky, b/c of the colors and the characters tie in so well with the whole theme, Lilo is even wearing a hula skirt! Good luck and congrats.

Thank you both for the ideas. I have tried Disney, but Ariel is one of those forgotten princesses. My original idea was to have the wedding at Disney World, but the costs were outrageous, so now I'm planning on a yacht dinner cruise in San Diego which offers a 4 hour cruise that includes ceremony and reception which cuts down the cost of renting different spaces. Anyway, I have looked for a cake-topper and I found the $295 dancing couple on eBay and it's not cheaper. I also found http://www.caketoppers.com/ppw753.htm which is $83, as you can see. I also found http://www.gotham****.com/muriel.jpg on an action figure site for $30 for the both of them, which I figured I could fashion into a topper, but I was wondering if that looked too immature.
Sorry if this seems dumb.

Hey,
First off, I LOVE DISNEY, especially the Little Mermaid so no, it's not dumb to me. I have seen those action figures before, on a site where they're already put together on a cake topper stand, and I don't care for the appearance, it doesn't look "right" to me. However, it could just be the way the cake topper stand is "garishly" decorated. I also found an Ariel and Eric kissing pin, that if you took the back off, or even just left it, if it's a decent sized one it would look GREAT as a topper! Let me see if I can find the site for you:
http://www.fairytaleweddingstore.com/rcProd1.asp?id=338&c1=28 You could look on ebay and see if it's cheaper too.

Hey,
I found this one too. Not bad price and doesn't look "childish." http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Little-Mermaid-Prince-Ornament-Cake-Topper_W0QQitemZ270034971206QQihZ017QQcategoryZ440 36QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item2 70034971206

So far, I like http://www.weddingcram.com/proddetail.asp?prod=LR%2DG570&cat=55 for toasting flute for the B&G and I figured I could doll it up with tulle and shells.
Something like https://www.dbccollectibles.com/images/hb32307.jpg for bridal party toasting flutes (We're only have a MOH and BM).
And I like something like https://www.dbccollectibles.com/images/hb32306.jpg for cake knife and server.
I could probably add some seafoam-coloured fabric or ribbons to make them match the rest of the colour scheme better.

Hey,
Good ideas. Oo glad my pin idea helped! I think for your theme those glasses and knive server set are perfect, they don't really fit my theme so I'm not using them ones. I found more 'beachy' ones.

Not sure if it makes much of a difference or not, but I was curious to see if I could find your Bridal Party and cake/knife server set cheaper:

Hey,
No problem. Nah you're not "bad" at this, it takes some time and I'm always looking for the cheapest this or that so glad I can help. Seems like everyone on this site is on a budget and it doesn't hurt to look around before making a definite decision, that's all. To keep all your ideas on here straight, you might want to think about making a journal it's really easy to manage all your wedding finds, just a suggestion.

I make message in a bottle wedding invitations. I am also using them for my wedding and everyone has called to rave about them. I also have a great pic of the seashell cake we are having, if you would like pics.

Another way to incorporate Little Mermaid would be to play some of the music. It sounds a little cheesy at first but a friend of mine got married recently and she did her father/daughter dance to "kiss the girl" It was very sweet. That song would also work for the first dance. Just a thought. :)

I was thinking of using the orchestral peice that plays in the movie during Ariel's day with Eric for the ceremony song that plays before "here comes the bride". I'm still trying to figure out what to do for the first dance since we don't have "a song".
I recently found ringbearer pillows that are made of one big seashell. And haircombs by the same person. I was also thinking of making part of the wedding favours with shells.
I'd love to see a photo of your cake, cstl.

I went through all of my Disney stuff (I worked there for 7 years, so I have tons of pins, watches, photo frames, etc) but didn't have any LM stuff for you. I think that the music would be beautiful.
Disney used to have a restaurant called Ariel's at the Yacht Club resort, I don't know if there are photos of it anywhere but it would be good for decor ideas.
I think that a fishbowl centerpiece (minus the floating candles!) would be perfect for you!

I was gonna use this http://www.gotham****.com/muriel.jpg to make my cake topper. Thank you but I'm trying to steer away from dolls and kids' **** becasue the majority of my guests don't have any respect for me as an adult, so I don't really want to play to that. What I'm having a hard time finding are cheap ocean-themed items that don't seem "beach wedding".

Hey,
What about doing fish and dolphins for ocean theme stuff? How about using "waves" on the cake decoration or for something else? What about sea glass for decorations or other things? What about "fake" coral or sea plants as centerpieces? Faux pearls would add to the ocean theme. Use colors and accent colors that remind you of the water, not the beach. Yellow and red and orange are more beachy, blues, and greens are ocean to me. Boats and ships would be ocean not necessarily beachy. Hope I've helped with something.

Okay, I am SOOO glad that I found your thread... here is the deal, I am doing pretty close to the same thing, I found that three hundred dollar figurine on ebay and got a hundred dollars off, don't give up, they're our there!!!
When I met my husband he had never had a girlfriend, sex, or wife let alone a crush... we were standing in the livnig room and I kept looking from his eyes to his lips and he was looking pretty dreamy too, except he actually asked my "why are you looking at my lips, is there something on them?". His roomate saw that this was going on and snuck into his room and played "kiss the girl" off of the computer and that was our first kiss. That is what we are going to do our first dance to... there's an idea. also you can play tracks like "under the sea" and the Chef song... during the meal. That is all we are going to do, but we are going to do a sea shell and under the sea theme, like having blue christmas likghts all around, green LED ice cubes, and our flowers are foing to be Bright yellow tulips and Dark blue delphinium. Hee hee, any ideas from you??? Low LOw LOW budget bride here!!! Good luck, e-mail me if you have any questions, af_van_eaton@hotmail.com :)

Yay! I'm so glad someone else is doing something similar ^.^ If you're leaning more towards seashell things, I found this cute website http://www.weddingwhimsy.com/index.html and if you don't mind ebay, just do a search with keyword "seashell" and they have a ton of things made of shells, looks like shells, and shells in bulk to make your own things. I don't knwo when you're wedding is, so I don't know how much time you have to bide and bargain hunt. My e-mail is vampyre_lexia@yahoo.com if you want to swap ideas or whatnot ^.^ Good luck!

Hee, hee, that is awesome, I had actually looked at that site, when are you getting married??? I would be more than willing to sell you this figurine that I found for cheap cheap cheap, if it would help! It's the three hundred dollar one... I am getting married (again) on the third or march 2007. I found these cute coral centerpieces at fredmeyers in alaska... they are white and hold three candles, we bought all they had. What are you doing for favors??? How about food??? Crab, I thought would be a little morbid :) Hee hee :0 Get back to me, :)
