Besides making it on your own. What are ways to make a cheap 3 tiered cake. I am going to take pictures over to vons and albertsons and see if they can make a wedding cake. I know one thing. I certainly AM NOT going to spend $400 on my cake. So we will see!

You can always have them make a plain cake with no adornments at all, then after recieving the cake, you can add fresh or faux flowers, ribbon, whatever you want.. Or, I've read in many different places a good way to reduce the price is to have a very small cake decorated however you want it, to be brought out for the cake cutting ceremony and then have a sheet cake (of the same flavor) to be cut out of site to be served to your guests.

That is what I am doing. I am having a small tiered wedding cake for the acutal cake cutting. It will probably be big enough to serve the head table since (if I am correct) the bride and groom serve the head table. Then I am having one of two sheet cakes made to serve the guests. I was going to have fun with the sheet cakes, have pictures of us or things we like put on them and have them out for guests to see before dessert.

Hey,
If you wanted to save even more, cupcakes would work. Plus, like the sheet cakes you could get really creative if you wanted to do them yourself or have friends/family help, etc. Saves on buying/using plates and utensils I'm sure. And who doesn't like cupcakes!?

What our plans are is I am having a family friend who makes the best red velvet I have ever tasted bake the cakes into the shape I want. Then this cake decorator is going to do the design. The design I picked is simple this isn't the exact one but very similiar. I set aside a 100 for a cake.

You could also try culinary or pastry schools. They are often willing to do it at cost to build their portfolio.

walmart. i know it sounds stupid and you think. . . WALMART?!?! they have 3 tiered cakes in a package that they sell plain iced for $113. then you buy a full sheet cake and you are only out about $150 for about 200 people. you can decorate the cake as you wish. it has the fluted icing around the bottom edges of the tiers. you can add flowers, a cake topper or what ever you like. these cakes are really moist. they are typical birthday cake tasting. but have buttercream frosting on them. its worth a try

I think monogram wedding cake toppers really dress up any cake. In fact, The most simple cakes with the bride and grooms initials on top look more elegant than most any elaborately decorated cake. And you can keep the toppers in a personalized shadow box or on a classy display stand. They come in metal and acrylic and are very affordable. You can see them at http://www.creationmetals.com There are lots of examples and pictures in the gallery.

Try Publix if you have one--a friend of mine got hers from them and it was beautiful and tasted good. Culinary schools or local community colleges that have baking programs, a high school that has a culinary pro-start program, or try a Costco/BJ's/Sams club. The Costco by me makes terrifc cakes!

I don't what time you are planning on having your wedding or what you have planned the night before ( I will be decoratoring my ceremony and reception site) but if you really wanted to do your own cake. Micheal's has cake decorating classes and in the martha stewart magazine they break down the different types of designs.
