i am planning to get married on the beach in maine and am also having a bit of a hard time finding the right dress, but i am thinking of getting a dress of j crew...you can see them at www.jcrew.com and go the the special occasions section of the page. also a couple of the bridal shops that i went to have what they call "destination dresses" for people that want less formal dresses for beach type weddings. some of the dresses are nice, but you really have to look. some of them are very prom-like and others are still very poofy and typical wedding dress looking and price. it depends on what you are looking for. hope it helps. i will be keeping an eye on your postings as well!

I am getting married in Sept at a resort in Mexico and I too was looking for something less formal but still elegant. Believe it or not, after many weeks of searching, I found my dress, new with tags, on ebay. It is perfect and is brand new. (use the search engine on there and make sure you specify NEW WITH TAGS). Alot of bridal shops will sell their closeouts and overstocks on there and you can get some really good deals. Good luck!

My biggest concern when shopping for my dress was that I didn't want to drag a train through the sand, but I wanted a floor length gown. I did end up with a prom dress, but it is just what I wanted: a ballgown with Tulle and crystals embedded in the layers to make it sparkle. I was concerned that it looks too informal, but we are getting married on the beach, so who cares! :)

I am getting married in Jamaica at Couples SweptAway in May 2005, and I am having mine made, so I can get exactly what I want for my beach wedding. I would suggest you look at some patterns so you are sure to get the material and dress you really want.

One thing to keep in mind when getting married at any destination is the weather. Since you're getting married in a tropical area keep in mind that it will more than likely be HOT, humid, possibly raining. If you're getting married on the beach two gorgeous beach dresses that pop to mind are Cindy Crawfords short, slip dress when she married Randy Gerber on the Beach...and Carolyn Bissette Kennedy's longer bias-cut, silk slip dress when she married John Kennedy Jr. They got married in a small chapel on the beach.
Yes...you may have to give up the 6-year-old-girls romantic notion of having a Cinderella/Princess wedding dress...but I think if you keep it simple, airy, and comfortable you'll be MUCH more at ease all day. The whole purpose of getting married on the beach is to keep it comfortable right? So why wear a 20 pound tulle/beaded concoction on the in the sand and surf?

I would suggest you check out J.Crew. They have some really nice simple beachy dresses. OR you might want to consider looking at bridesmaid dresses in ivory, cream, light pink, etc. Those are generally more casual. The third option is to have something made. That way you get exactly what you want.

Good luck!

Do you already know what your dress looks like? If so, post a link to it so we can help give suggestions for dresses or styles. Also, what are your wedding colors? What color do you want the bridesmaid dresses?

I also need help. Most of the dresses I'm sort of interested in are Bride's Maid's dresses. Are there any other recommendations for good websites other than Jcrew (I'm looking for something a little more casual)?

THIS IS THE KIND OF THING I'M LOOKING FOR. WHO KNOWS...MAYBE THIS IS THE ONE. IT COMES IN DIFFERENT COLORS:
