announcements, not invitations

since my wedding is going to be a bit pricy, we are only going to invite immediate family...what is the best way to announce to everyone else formally through like a letter or announcement that we are getting married, when and all that good stuff, without making them feel left out, or like we didnt want them at the wedding, because i want everyone to know, but we just cant invite as many people as we wanted... thanks!

Just send out an announcement letting everyone know you are engaged and will be getting married, but that it is going to be immediate family, because you are not having anything big. A lot of people do that, and they will understand.
